It doesn't need to be in a virtual machine. It's just easier for most people.

wth.gif Doesn't the VM get its connection to the network (and internet) through a virtual bridged network? Or have I misunderstood that bit too?

It does yeah. But if you choose bridged then the VM gets a proper IP address from the DHCP server which makes setting up HFM in windows easier.
