New build and dedicated sound card

Thread Starter
Hi,
I will be building new rig in very near future and after reading few posts here I started to think if its worthy to buy separated sound card. Last time I had one was several years ago and it was some Sound Blaster 128 or something like that.
I was thinking about:
1. Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI-e
2. Asus Xonar DG 5.1

The question is whether it is worthy if I have only Creative Inspire P380 2.1 speakers.

Thx

Hi stileth :whee:
I Don't think its worth it, those are 5.1 cards (except the creative). The onboard sound on your future mobo will probably have 7.1 sound
7.1>5.1
Pls post specs of your future rig

Agreed
Sound card is not just about some better audio quality and the DG have something extra is the built-in headphone amp incase you have got some headset , it will do greatly
And it's only 15 bucks

And forget about the Xtreme audio even if you find it for free its has very bad drivers

Sound cards are not about the amount channels that they give you, they are about improving the quality of the audio that is outputted to the speakers.

Im am using a 7.1 xonar dx after using onboar 7.1 and the difference in quality is night and day.

My Fiio E7, Realtek ALC889 and Titanium HD all sound just about the same.

So no, not worth it.

Yeah, but you're also not really discerning, are you?

no your the one who's not discerning. if you were, u'd agree w/ me.

also huh huh huh, you've never listened to an alc889 in ur life, so zip it.

ALSO consider this.

Creative ships out their Titanium HD with EFFed up settings pre-selected. The other day I took my Titanium HD out and stuffed it in another PCIe slot just to see if I could finally hear a difference. I turned my computer on and the drivers auto-installed. To my surprise, I did hear a difference. First I was very skeptical, but after a lot of back and forth listening, I decided that it was there. I didn't think it sounded better, just different. Like they abused the aperture as any hipster photographist does. I sat there completely dumbfounded. How could this be, I thought. Maybe I had been wrong all along. BUT THEN. Wait a minute, I thought. What settings was I using? AHA, the Titanium HD was auto set to gamer mode with a whole bunch of crappy dehancements selected.

Why would Creative do THAT, I wondered. Obviously because if they had chosen good settings, nobody would have heard a damn difference. They are a millions-billions dollar company. They KNOW what they're doing.
