Need a wee bit of help with water cooling?

Thread Starter
So, i figured this would be the place to ask, the fan controller on one of my GTX 460s has fried, chances are i can't return the card, yet the rest of the card still works fine, so i am considering going water cooling for that, i need a basic idea of how to do such a thing, and can i do it for something under 150 dollars or so, doesn't need to be perfect, just needs to keep a single GTX 460 relativly cool, i've seen people mod their Corsair Hx0 Coolers, Could my H50 with push + pull handle the extra load?

keep in mind outside my H50 i have no experience in Water cooling.

I wouldn't really bother modding the H50... You could do it, but it really would be a pain, entirely custom, and probably wouldn't work very well due to the low flow and the single 120 radiator of the H50. Some people have done it though, but they usually add a 240 radiator in the mix..

For a 460, couldn't you just find a way to ghetto-rig an adapter from a 4-pin molex to the 460's fan plug? They're all 12v, aren't they? That being said, you'd probably want it to be on a controller because they're loud at 100%, or you could do a quick splicing and make it 7v or 5v from the molex by rearranging the wires.

Also, it might just be worth RMAing the card, even though you can't return it (You might have meant you're out of warranty period or something by return).

Under $150? eehhhhh maybe. Do some bargain shopping. I'm not really sure if there any exist any GPU watercooling kits out there like there are for CPUs. If you wanted to cool just the GPU (and do it cheap) you prolly have to have these:

GPU Universal Block ~$50
Pump ~$50
120 Rad ~$40
Vram Sticks ~$15
Fan ~$10
Tubing ~$10

were you wanting to add your 460 to the H50's loop?

As far as water cooling goes I never like to recommend kits. Kits come with stuff just enough to do the stuff for yourself but many kits often come with just okay parts for cooling. I recommend a custom solution to get the best out of your money. But for $150 it would be quite difficult to get a proper loop going. MCP355 pump new is about $60, XSPC RX240 about $66, water cooling accessories tubing/zip ties/clamps about $15, 2x GT AP-14/15 $32, and a GTX460 full water block about $100 or more depending on brand. So you're looking at about $273.

You can cheap out and get a universal GPU block but the ramsinks for the videocard will suck because they come with the sticky backs and will often fall off because of the heat. A full waterblock solution would be better. Iandh use to make custom ramsinks for videocard but I don't think that person does it anymore. The person did it for the 9800GTX series and I think a few of the ATI cards.

It's going to be expensive for water cooling, if you want to find things cheaper you can try the FS/FT threads and see if anyone is willing to part with their water cooling parts.

If you need more information read this thread, it provides plenty of guides and will answer practically almost every question you have.

remove the plastic shroud on the card and ziptie a 92mm-120mm fan, and control that fan how you see fit.

I can't really return it due to the heat 460s make the 'do not peel this warrenty sticker' peeled off and i doubt they would RMA it, i can't stand the sound of 100% fan, its not noticeable at 50-70% but at 100% its loud as all buggery so water cooling is kinda needed.

And as for water cooling, and fittings and everything else, i honestly don't know, I know what a pump, a radiator and a res is, but when it comes to all these numbers

Though another question if i might? Can you cool TWO gpu's with one loop i think its called.

Best that can be done is probably $200ish.

XSPC X2O DC-200 "Bay-Res" Pump/Reservoir Combo $39.95

XSPC RS240 Compact High Performance Radiator - Black $37.95

EK-FC460 High Performance Water Block for GeForce 460 GTX $94.95

$18 for cheap-O fittings and tubing. Hopefully you have a few 120mm fans. This would work very well and keep it cool.
