GTX 580 SLI Hitching and Stuttering...

Ok im not sure if this a driver related issue or some other kind of hardware issue.

When i first switch to GTX 460 SLI to GTX 580 everything seem as smooth as my SLI gtx 460 set up. But since February i have been noticing hitching in all my games. Even old games like CS 1.6, CSS, An so on.

Also notice in black ops my gpu usage with GTX 580 SLI with Vsync just sits at 33% with max Setting and without vsync on it just jumps from 20% to 80%, where my gtx 460 sli sat at 60-80% during black ops with Vysnc on same settings and without vsync on 80-99%.

The hitching inst just on black ops, it happens on all games, SC2,BFBC2,Portal 2, and WoW some worse then others.

Only thing running in the background is steam, Afterburner and nvidia control panel for now.

Old Rig:
I7 930 4.0GHZ
EVGA 3 WAY SLI
CORSAIR XMS 1600HMZ 8 GIGS
WD BLUE 500GB
BFG EX 1000 WATT
H50
WINDOWS 7 64 - BIT
ASUS 24 INCH and Alienware 120hz

New Rig
I7 2600K (Tried Stock and OC 4.8ghz)[Temps fine]
ASUS P8P67 WS Revolution
Corsair XMS 1600mhz 8 Gigs
EVGA GTX 580 / EVGA GTX 580 SLI
WD BLUE 500GB
Corsair 1000 Watt HX
HAF-X
H70
Windows 7 64-bit SP1
ASUS LCD 24 Inch and Alienware 120hz

My test methods,

1.I thought maybe it might have been vsync so i turn that on and off = Hitching and stuttering

2.Clean driver install (Cleansweep and so on) (Try all drivers from when the gtx 580 first came out up every one till now.) = Hitching and stuttering

3.Tried a 120hz and 60hz monitor = Hitching but less stuttering

4.Tried a different PSU (BFG EX 1000 And Corsair HX 1000) = Hitching

5.Tired install all compents into another computer case= Still had the same problem

6.Tried Using one card at a time( Test both)Single = Hitching

7.Tried SLI on and off = Hitching

8.Overclocked I7-930 to 4.0ghz and Overclocked I7 2600K to 4.8ghz= Hitching

9.Tried Lowest settings and res. and no aa = Found the hitching decreased a little but was still there, also felt more smooth.

10.Tried Reassemble my rigs= Hitching and stuttering

11.Tested memory out = Hitching and stuttering

12.Defraged, and all sectors are good = Hitching and stuttering

13.Update all sound drivers and so on. = Hitching and stuttering

14. All temps are under 75c for gtx 580s under a load and CPU temp is normal under load= Hitching and stuttering

15.Tried different settings in NVCP (Mess with the sli rendering, power management, frames ahead, triple buffering, AA and AF Options) = Hitching and stuttering

16. Built a new rig= Hitching still there and stuttering

17. Fresh install windows 7 64-bit ( Old rig and new rig)= Hitching still there
and stuttering

Theres more but i cant remember all right now.

Some other threads to try to solve this problem:

http://www.overclock...ml#post13066959

http://www.overclock...ml#post13603855

now the one thing i haven't done yet which is switch out this WD blue Hard drive that was given to me a year ago (In old rig and new rig). (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-073-_-Product )

Another thread to read: http://www.overclock...hard-drive.html

Could this hard drive be giving me this problem ? I just order a WD black 32mb 6gb SATA 500gb hard drive tonight.

I'm really starting to lose it here. Haven't been able to really play anything. Portal 2 wasn't so bad with hitching seem really smooth but i could still feel it. Not like Black ops and BFBC2 and BRINK. Jesus is that bad. Looking forward to rage and BF3 why brother buying them if my games are going to hitch.

My cuz has the same PC as my old one but with GTX 570 and he does not get this problem. I can play on his computer without wanting to stab my eyes out.

Hope someone can help me out.

Thank you

Sorry for the bad spelling and grammar. Just got off of work.

EDIT:

I'm trying to figure this out, i know this like the 3rd topic i have made but i thought it was the monitor and psu at first. Waiting for the hard drive to get here to see if that makes a difference.

Theres no bad sectors on this one but im out of ideas. I can watch my Girlfriend brother play the xbox 360 and all his games look smooth as butter. I can watch him play CoD Games and not feel like im going to throw up.

EDIT 2:

Can also watch movies and you tube videos fine with high res and not get this hitching and stuttering.

EDIT 3:

EDIT 4:
Heres the DPC test after new hard drive is installed... Windows 7 is downloading SP1. Only Steam, Nvidia and Windows Updates have been install on the computer. Nothing Else. BFBC2 is being install from steam.

Do you use any software to monitor your hardware stats such as temps and usage?

Reason i ask is that i had this on a single card setup(sig) so i knew straight away it wasnt driver related microstutter and went on a bender uninstalling software and stuff until i had smooth fps.

Turns out it was a program i was using called AIDA64(everest ultimate)which i was using to report GPU/NB/CPU temps and usages to my G15 LCD screen.
The app was causing very bad stuttering to any game play, benchmark scores where at were they should have been but in game i had very bad stuttering,so annoying i almost didnt want to game as it was doing my head in so bad.

After process of elimination i confirmed it was AIDA64 by reinstalling and BOOOOM.....problem was back.

It may not be your problem/solution but it sure was mine.
Maybe you should take a look?

Heres my task manger. Tried the afterburner off and still get the same thing

In black ops i forgot to mention, when vsync is on ill sit at 60fps but when it goes to 59 or 58 and same with vynsc off, 125 when it goes below 80 it goes for a split sec every 3 to 4 the number goes red and then back to white. idk what the means,

AI suite monitors your mobo for temps and voltages ect, kill it and try that maybe.

Like i say its more a suggestion and just a pointer that if you was using that program AIDA64 then it would most likely be that.

Since these are all (potentially) online games you speak of ... are you playing all of them online? If not, try the single-player campaigns where available, just to see if the issue goes away.

The idea above that the issue may have to do w/some kind of monitoring software is a great one. Speedfan causes very annoying hitching on my system when gaming.

Did you try after a truly 'fresh' install, i.e. one where all you'd installed was drivers, prior to throwing on AI Suite, Acronis, etc?

I would also try running a DPC latency checker, like the one that can be found here: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml. If you are getting to any yellow or red lines, let me know as I can expound about what this means if you don't already know

Obviously doing a chkdsk if you'd not done so would be a good idea, since HD is one of the few things that remains from your old build, where you had the same problem.

Have you tried disabling the sound 'card' in the bios (may have to enable the sound on the video card instead, just so that games will 'find' a sound out), just to see if it's sound-related?

How about when you disable SLI and just run single card ... does the issue completely go away?

Have you tried an alternate SLI bridge?

How long of hitches are we talking about here, btw? And does an FPS graph reflect these hitches? How big is the drop in FPS when they occur? Is the time between each hitch pretty consistent, or is it totally random?

KK,

I know this won't solve your other games problems, but for blackops, make sure both commands are setup ok in EITHER console OR config_MP:

SETA R_MULTITHREADED DEVICE should be set to 1 (for all CPU cores to be seen and used)

SETA R_MULTIGPU should be set to 1 (which means ok for more than one card...the other setting, 0, is for single cards)

DATA -wize I don't think it's an issue, but your hard drive is the slowest/oldest component in your rig, seems OUT OF PLACE in performance and capacity...

Try everything above but the sound card thing, ill give that a try.

Hitching like a mircosuttering but its like my frames drop for 1ms and then go back in forth. Also it feels like a large amount of input lag. Its just when im playing.

DPC comes back all normal.

EDIT:

Someone stated it could have something to do with AHCI enable in my bios could be causing this. Maybe idk. What you think?

I think it's a very long-shot, but since you're so low on options and it takes like 5 seconds ... it makes sense to try disabling AHCI. Also make sure all hardware devices that you don't actually use (like the firewire header, as an example) are shut off, just to reduce unneeded interrupts.

Do you not have any extra HDD lying around you can throw windows on, just to see if that cures the problem? If you lived near me I'd loan you one ... probably have like 20 HD's in the closet.

Have you checked your event viewer to see if there's any recurring error?

Also, you say the issue goes away when you disable SLI, but I would try each card separately, in each of the two slots you're using, make sure that in all four scenarios, the problem doesn't exist with a single card in either slot.

Is there anything in Device Manager that lacks a driver?

I'd also try going Microsoft site and grab whatever is the latest DirectX version they have posted, and installing it. I know games come w/DX and install it and everything, but it's worth a try throwing on the complete DX package from MS as I think there's some stuff that's in there that's not in the installers that come w/games.
