Unusual wow lag?

Thread Starter
Hello overclock.net, I just recently started playing wow again after some time off and noticed some really weird lag... When im in these 10m raids my fps stays above a solid 100 fps and even shoots up to 200 fps no matter what resolution im playing on/veiw distance. However when I am in 25m raids or in major cities my fps goes all the way down to like 15-30 fps. Its a no brainer that 25 ms and cities are going to be a bit more graphically intense but over 100 fps difference seems way too dramatic. I usually play with vert sync disabled, i disabled the TLB/coolnquiet features on my Amd Phenom 550 BE and in the nvidia control panel have set everything to performace over quality I the only other program I run while raiding is AMD fusion to turn off all my background programs. Im to the point where im debatting on spending some money and taking it into micro center and seeing if they can find out whats going on. But figured id ask on here first to see if i could save a few bucks.

All the people I have talked to have told me with my hardware I should be getting hardly any lag from a game like wow. What do you guys think?

I agree WoW isn't a very graphical intensive game. I have experienced odd lag spikes and FPS issues. Unless you are noticing the same issues with other programs I wouldn't spend any money having it looked at. Maybe when getting ready to go into a city or do a 25m raid turn the settings down. It sounds game more than PC. Also you could also try running a WoW repair from the program folder.

That doubt that is because of your graphics, it is more than likely a CPU bottleneck if anything. Regardless, 25fps in town isn't something to get angry about. To test my theory turn your graphical settings all the way down and see if you still lag.
Another factor could be latency, and the fact your graphics card is getting a little dated.

If my theory is wrong, what operating system do you use? Run task manager while you are in town, see if anything is taking a lot of ram/cpu besides WoW. If WoW is taking 100% then your CPU could be bottle necking you.

PS the guys at microcenter, along with almost every other retail store are pretty much idiots when it comes to anything besides basic software trouble shooting. "hey you have a virus, let me upgrade your antivirus for you"

Post a speedtest.

its related to your internet connection, if its player related (25man raids). everyone experiences this issue, its just how the game sends packets when their are so many players next to each other (ie raiding)

particle affects/model textures may have an impact as well

You on lastest GFX drivers? Sounds like the issue some of my past guild mates had, some couldn't do 25m's but did 10m with no problem. Try defragging the WoW install folder might help.

@svallbard is right too, but 100 down to 15-20 shouldn't happen. Particles Effect (spells) try turning those down a tad

Sorry, but that's the harsh reality. Look at my rig and even I can drop to 30 FPS in cities. That's the way it is and it's nothing wrong with your computer.

25 man raids are very intensive for both the CPU and GPU, so expect lower frames.

For your information, I can get 300 FPS outside of cities and drop down to way below 100 in 25 mans and cities. This is how the game is and you need to learn to deal with it.

Yea i have latest drivers. Turning settings all the way down and it stays about the same fps. My latency is really good tho around 90 ms. I see tons of people who make guide videos and such who dont lag what so ever in 25 mans and their also running fraps with lesser systems (talked to them). Going to try the repair and will post a speed test later on tonight.
