AMD Phenom X6 1090T vs AMD Phenom II X4 840/965

Thread Starter
Hi Everyone,

I have a very hard decision here.

I have the Intel Pentium Dual Core E2160 and was wondering what sort of boost I would get by using the AMD x6 1090t processor. I will be gaming on Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (and Revelations when it comes out in November) and was wondering if I could use the AMD at high setting with no lag, as at the moment I have quite a bit of lag sometimes.

I have been told that the more cores isn't necessarily better for games, and that the Assassin's Creed franchise uses more CPU power than GPU. Am I right?

The Intel PCs are much more expensive. I would just like a processor which runs better than my current Intel Pentium Dual Core and is ready for any further gaming developments yet to come which uses more cores. I will be using the same GFX card that I have at the moment (ATI Radeon HD 5670 1GB) for any PC that I buy.

I am on a <£310 budget.

The PCs I am looking at are:
1. Phenom II x6 1090t @ £300: http://bit.ly/js2CIg
2. Phenom II x4 965 @ £298.90: http://bit.ly/mTnhAe
3. Phenom II x4 840 @ £315: http://bit.ly/meGTyb

The pros I can think about are:
PC 1: Cheaper. Future-proof. More cores. Ready for hard core programs.
PC 2 & 3: Have been complimented for better gaming. No need to spend 'more money' on 1090t, even though it is cheaper.

Please help! I am puzzled as to what to do.

Thanks.

Thuban (x6) generally clocks higher than Deneb (x4).
The two extra cores the X6 has should help future proof.

One of the reasons games don't do so hot with AMD CPUs is because the graphics engine aren't multi-threaded to use more than 2 cores. Clock to clock Intel is much better than AMD, plus the fact that Intel CPUs clock much higher. So until games start using more than two threads for graphics rendering, FPS won't be really high on AMD CPUs.

Get a i5 2500K instead. It's better in every way, even in applications that use 6 cores. It should be the same price, but around 20%-50% faster in games.

Bulldozer is right around the corner, and SB always wins. he should spend as little as possible on CPU+mobo and get the best RAM/PSU/Case/etc possible.

I would recommend checking out cpu reviews (IE google search="CPU Reviews") so you know what you're buying and why.

This. Don't go AMD, it doesn't compare and will be outdated faster.

EDIT: I won't even put on a flame-suit. The 2500k will be faster even at stock.

There is no argument that the 2500K is faster.
It's a matter of price.

Intel motherboard generally cost more too.
Though I don't know by how much.

So if you can convince the OP to spend more and/or wait, by all means.
Might even make him happier with his setup.

As far as gaming performance the 965 is better I have owned a 975 and 1100 and the deneb 975 clocks much higher to around 4.8 while my 1100 only reached 4.4 i run it 24/7 at 4.3.All chips are different so you may do better or not as well, but that will give you ballpark ideas. If you look at http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...50,2843-6.html it will give you a better idea of where each cpu stands. Also get a mb that is am3+ so you can upgrade to bd when you are ready. That is if you decide to go AMD
edit: as i look at chart I see 965 is equal to 1090 in gaming performance so I will go with previous poster in that 1090 will future proof you abit more.

The OP would likely meet the same wall of 3.8/3.9 GHz with either CPUs using air cooling.
The difference being one has two more cores.
