AMD Phenom X6 1090T vs AMD Phenom II X4 840/965 - Page 3

dont get anything less than a thuban. the most cheapest 1055T will overclock the same with the most expensive 1100T and the price difference is big. don't get a deneb/x4. thubans even tho having more cores overclocks better, has better IMC and runs cooler.

People, stop trolling Intel on this thread, he asked specifically for AMD and AMD only on his budget list..... Some people are not as rich as you other guys, Not everyone has the money for it.

Intel does do better in games.... but like what? a few little extra FPS and that's it? It's not worth it, 6 cores clocked to 4.0GHz would be plenty, and a decent enough graphics card will run every game with ultra graphics 1080p with at least 40+ or maybe alot more FPS just like mine. So whats the point?

I say go with a 1090T than a X4 as it's more future proofed and it can clock high than any other X4 CPU

If sticking with the original specs, go 1090T. I had a 965BE (C2 revision) that was fast, but the Thuban honestly felt faster. In everday apps it was better. Games were really about the same. Heat was lower, although I know the 965 was the 140 watt model. As for overclocking, I could take my 965 to 3.8 Ghz on stock (1.425) volts. However, on the same voltage, I have eeked out 4.0 Ghz from my 1090T.

If you are going to overclock, however, I highly suggest going 1055T and putting the extra money toward a solid board, 890 series chipset. The reason behind this is the 1055T will clock as high as the 1090T in almost every case I've seen. They're both good chips.

I'm not going to extol the virtues of purchasing an Intel branded chip, although I will dispute the motherboard pricing discrepancy to a point. A mid-range Intel board will cost roughly the same as a top-end AMD board.

Speaking of that, if you buy now, and choose a new motherboard, I would highly suggest an AM3+ board, as it will be compatible with Thuban and (should you upgrade later) Bulldozer.

This. Don't go AMD, it doesn't compare and will be outdated faster.

EDIT: I won't even put on a flame-suit. The 2500k will be faster even at stock.
When conpared to intells 2700 socket changes (in the last 6 months lol) amd is the overall better buy because then your not having to buy a new cpu/ mb every time you want to upgrade AMD FTW

I've decided that I will be going for the 1090t computer (and for an extra 1 quid a 750W PSU). Thanks for all of your help. I will be using this forum when I have more questions.

phenom x4 840 is not really a phenom. it missing the L3 cache. its seems like an athlon cpu to me. i would just get a x6 or wait for the bulldozer. or heck...i rather get a sandy bridge 2500k if you're building from scratch.

At least go for the X4 955,it's only $120 USD,but the X6 1055T doesn't cost much more.
The X6's overclock slightly better on both the CPU and NB,has a better IMC,and runs a little cooler than X4's.

Be sure to get a AM3+ motherboard, you can drop in a Bulldozer FX CPU later on.
Moar cores!
