Android or iOS tablet

Thread Starter
Looking to get my first tablet mainly because i'm really intreasted in playing about with one .

I'd need it to do the following
  • Surf the web
  • Watch HD movies
  • Some light reading
  • Ideally have access to an IDE or plain text editor to do a little programming on the comute to work
  • Read comic books

Ideally I'd like to be able to use it to do some work to and from my placement on the bus.
Looking to get a good quality tablet with a nice screen. Ideally about 10" screen give or take.
Budget isn't too much of an issue looking to spend less than £500. Storage wise I think 32gb would be enough as I can just store alot of stuff on my system or if I get a 3G tablet store it on a server I have access to it on the move. 3G isnt essential.

As for operating system from what I understand the market is pretty much limited to iOS or Android. The iPad looks really nice but I'm wondering if its all hype. The android ones seem to be alot newer. Main question is what is the android appstore like for tablets? I've got an iphone 4 atm and its brilliant but the one thing I dont like is the lack of customisation without jailbreaking the phone, I know this is going to be the same for the iPad which sort of puts me off.

Basically what tablet would you get? Android and try something new or iOS and buy into the hype?

I would go for Android over iOS for a Tablet, the reason being there isn't much more you can do with an iPad than you can your iPhone.

Also most Android Tablets have Flash player, enabling you to watch web content built in to web pages, which you can't do with iPad (unless jailbroken).

Android is the biggest OS for Tablets out there, and being open source, many Apps are free, for example, Angry Birds costs 59p on iOS, but free on Android.

In a nutshell you can do more with Android than iOS, and there is much more choice, but for your budget you should be able to get a decent Tablet, I'd suggest the Motorola Zoom, looks pretty nifty to me...

Anyway, good luck!

I agree. To me and others here, Honeycomb is more of a streamlined desktop experience rather than an upscaled mobile platform like the iPad. Basically, you can still have the flexibility and customizability of Android but also features a unique implementation of the UI; it really feels more suited for tablet usage. App count, though significantly less than in iOS, is still quite a lot for users and most apps still run on the OS without any scaling or performance issues.

I'd look at something like the ASUS Transformer, which costs $399 here which is less than what the Xoom asks for ($600) yet offers most, if not all, of the specs including Tegra 2 and 1GB of RAM.

I'm in the same situation and from what I've seen so far is if you want to watch movies/shows in 720p the transformer has issues playing them. The Ipad 2 currently can do 720p with goodplayer or AVPlayerHD.

Check out a cheap wifi only xoom. Don't get much better in build quality. Or wait for the SGT I0.1v

If possible, give them both a try and decide then which you like best. My vote's for an iPad 2.

The thing about iOS is it's all the same hardware everywhere. Everything made for the ipad works with the ipad period. iOS has been around much longer so you have access to more apps. Now with that said iPad is also locked down and not open source so you essentially lose your freedom. You gain a bit more with jailbreaking it but not much.

I personally say go for Android. Im a huge supporter of open source development. The device you buy is yours and yours to do with what you want. May not have as many apps but it will have what you want. You didn't mention you wanted games so you won't see much a difference in apps you'd want/need compared to iOS. The smaller price point will also keep some money in your pocket while giving you just as good an experience freedom to do with your android OS, looks, customability, etc is always a perk of android. And more than likely won't have to deal with half retarded proprietary software and hardware. With android you plug into any usb device, enable usb transfer and wallah, you can just throw what you need on your storage, unlike ipad where you need to have some bulky and horribly designed software installed just to use it. Also I'm sure any android device you get will use a normal usb connection, lose your cable whatever..buy another or use one laying around. iPad has that stupid proprietary connection....bleh

The iPad unsubsidized you are not getting what you pay for with their insane markup, they're nice devices but nice for about $200 less. Also do you want to have 3g or anything or are you looking for wifi only?
