i7 740qm - How to start Windows with specified cores??? help

Thread Starter
Ok let me start telling everyone what my issue is.

First i will start by explaining turbo boost on the mobile i7 740qm processors

When turbo boost isnt running the processor is running at 1.7ghz on all 4 cores.

When turbo boost is enabled it partly "deactivates" 2-3 cores and boost the processor frequency up to 3ghz

When playing starcraft 2 i get much better performance when turbo boost is enabled. But a windows process or thread will cause turbo boost to be disabled randomly and go back to 1.7 ghz on all 4 cores, when this happens i lose a ton of fps. (this is normal by default, as turbo boost always fluctuates processor frequency. )

What iam try to do is get windows to start on 2 physical cores

Now in msconfig.exe under the boot table you can choose how many cores you would like windows to use.

I can pick 1-8 cores , but i cant pick them specifically.

So if i pick 1 core, my processor is constantly running at 3ghz, just how i want it.

my problem is when i select 2 cores i dont get 2 physical cores, i get 1 physical core and 1 logical core. Aka a single core with hyper threading....

if i choose 4 cores , i get 2 cores with hyper theading....

I need to figure out how to start windows on cores number, 1 and 3 only!

If i can do this all my problems will be solved!!!

Any help or links to 3rd party boot applications will be much appreciated

What about disabling Intel Speed Step in BIOS? (Assuming that it is in the laptop BIOS)

Let me put it like this, i dont even understand why there is a bios menu on this laptop.

I can change my boot devices, thats about it. XD

I know what iam trying to do is possible, because windows already lets you choose how many cores to run, its just not specific enough.

Try it, go to msconfig.exe click boot tab and click advanced.

If i had a desktop processor this would be easy, because i could disable HT and select 2 cores. And BAM! iam only using 2 physical cores.... but i cant do that -.0

Cuz when i choose 2 i get a single core with ht enabled, which windows see as processors number 1, and 2

It doesn't understand that processor #2 is a logical core.

There has got to be a boot string i can add, i just dont know what it is...

Btw if you want starcraft 2 to run faster on your mobile i7 , this is how you do it.

See and if iam running only 2 physical cores, it forces turbo boost to stay enabled.

This is only a problem on the i7 mobile

Because its either
2 cores @ 3ghz @ 45tdp
OR you get 4 cores @ 1.7ghz for your total power consumption of 45w

But turbo boost switches back and forth...

I need it to STAY at 2 cores with a higher frequency and this is the only way to do it.
