[ATD] The Nvidia-Microsoft Pact Is Actually 11 Years Old

In light of recent events, in particular Nvidia agreeing to make ARM-based chips that will be used in forthcoming notebooks and tablet devices and thus setting up a new competitive dynamic with chip giant Intel, the revelation takes on new significance. Note my use of the word “new,†which this arrangement is not. (Update: An Nvidia spokesman tells me the arrangement between Nvidia and Microsoft has been disclosed every quarterly filing for more than a decade.)

In essence, it meant they can go from small enterprises to full scale production. That, and with having a M$ product on your system, Microsoft may be able to enforce or even enable a more strict guideline when it comes to software--->hardware configurations, meaning AMD/ATI/Intel may have to use their own kernel in future OS builds, or face bloatware after the fact is settled.

Nvidia still makes Linux drivers and still sells hardware to other people than just MS.

Is this considered a White Knight or Poison Pill takeover defense?

I suppose it all depends on how the market moves in the future.

We don't know how many companies have devided not to buy out Nvidia as a result of the pact in the past, and we also don't know if MS plans to go ahead and buy the company outright before a competing firm offers to [or in the event a competitor offers, for that matter].

To me, it feels like MS is trying to keep the market tipped in it's favor [like every other company would do] without actually becoming a monopoly or engaging in any monopolistic activities.

I wish MS would Take over Nvidia completely and start making good smartphones and tablets. I think MS could easily destroy the mac competition but its almost like they dont want to. Maybe they are afraid of anti-trust lawsuits.

Not as long as they're still using the Registry, DLL and OCX nightmare that is Windows...

The same thing happened when MSFT announced the Skype take-over and the Nokia partnership; People were overreacting for nothing. I still would like to see an exclusive deal regarding Windows Tablet 8 and Kal El(Nvidia's quad-core ARM SOC). I would write such a partnership off because Nvidia's chipsets have been lackluster in terms of sales.

Intel is planning SOCs for a spaced called "ultrabooks" with SB/IB processors but lets not pretend like they will be affordable even though I would much prefer an x86-based tablet to an ARM one.

In the event that Microsoft does buy out Nvidia, would that mean that AMD and Intel would have to form a mini-pact of their own?
