for me it would be an intel, ms and nvidia trio and AMD going for linux.

Very unlikely.

Hardware has nothing to do with Apple's success.

The Mac lineup isn't even successful. It still accounts for less then 10% of the market.

Depends on the market. For desktops, your right. But Apple holds very large shares of the tablet, portable music, and smartphone markets.

Despite the general concensus on OCN, you can't polish a turd well enough for the people at large to buy it.

Apple devices work. They may ot work to the specifications you or I would like, but their success isn't pure marketing. If the devices weren't worth the money, they wouldn't be purchased.

And thats as far as I'll go with that de-rail.

Which unfortunately they did right, hit hard and hit fast when said markets were blooming.

You'd be surprised. I ask my friends why they have iDevices and over half the time it's just because it's trendy or because they look good. There are no other slimline aesthetically pleasing yet well performing devices on the market, really (well, maybe smartphones, but definitely not MP3 players) which is quite sad.

I recently bought the 32gb iPhone 3gs I have just to test it out as a phone and use it as an iPod, which really turned out to be something I enjoy. It's easy and enjoyable, and for the most part whatever it lacks in software features, I can add in Cydia. I won't go so far as to say I enjoy it more than Android, but that's because I like the ability to write CFW and etc. but it's certainly taken my Liquid E over for an EDC phone. One thing I will give the iPhone credit for is battery life. To compare it to my Liquid it's night and day, I'd go so far as to say 2x as long.
