Ricoh GXR - Interested In Photography (noob)

Thread Starter

I am really interested in getting into photography and thought I could do some simple things with my Ricoh GXR w/ the P10 28-300mm lens. Could someone help me get off the ground with this? This is my first post here in photography. Not really sure if anyone is familiar with Ricoh as many have those Canon Rebels and Nikon D3100 cameras and stuff.

, I got it last summer and want to use it more and use it to it's fullest.

Could you... be more specific? You're not going to get a ton of replies to that question when there are a pair of excellent stickies in this forum for beginners that cover all of the operational basics.

uh...point at something you want a picture of, then click the shutter? not really sure what simple thing you are asking for.

thats a very nice camera you have, but you really need to tell us what you know and what you cant figure out how to do for us to be helpful....

I want to shoot sort of like this or the closest thing to that. Or like this. I know this lens can't achieve the best pictures like that, but I just want to get the best out of it.

Well see the thing it's a learning process. If you aren't shooting in manual and RAW already, then I would do so.

Also you will notice that a lot of people's photos aren't straight from the camera. There is some post processing with PP programs such as Lightroom. Shooting in RAW will you give much more control over the picture. There is more detail "hidden" in RAW format.

As for the second shot it can be achieved with a low shutter rate, high f-stop, an ND filter or polarizing filter if needed. Oh yeah and a tripod since being hand held with a 1/30 of a second or less will cause blur.

Read the stickies as advised, and keep looking at other people's work. Learn to read the EXIF data of a shot. If you don't have a flickr account yet, sign up for one and look for a group for your specific camera. You'll find others' shots and you can learn from them.

Also what aspect ratio should I shoot in? I usually have it in 4:3 but am not sure what others use.

3:2 is the traditional ratio. 4:3 is too square for my tastes. The irony is that most pre-made frames and mats are 4:3. I have to get custom frames for my prints.
