depends if you want to view on a old 4:3 monitor then shoot 4:3 if you want to print 8x12 or view on widescreen monitors then shoot 16:9.

also your camera probably tells you which one has more pixels so you shot shoot on the one with most pixels. you can always crop later.

personally i shoot 3:2

I don't really care about monitors, mostly about framing and viewing to others.
