First-time build

Hey guys, heard from a friend this was the place to go for help on a new computer. Basically I want a decent gaming rig that won't die on me in 3 years, for around $750. Here are the parts I've got at the top of my list so far -

HDD - Western Digital WD5002AALX Caviar Black Hard Drive - 500GB, 3.5", SATA 6Gbps, 7200 RPM, 32MB

MoBo - A455-2899 Asus M4A88TD-V EVO USB3 AMD 880GX, DDR3, USB 3.0, RAID, SATA 6.0GB/s

CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ955FBGMBOX

Vid Card - EVGA 01G-P3-1556-KR GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) FPB 1GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL

Only two questions so far - will all this be compatible? Second, some of the RAM I see says things like 'i5' or 'i7' in the name - does that mean it will only be recongnized by an intel motherboard? otherwise, this is a great deal -

Yep, all compatible Welcome to OCN!
RAM is standard and works on both AMD and Intel rigs. However, as a general rule, most recommended are 1333Mhz RAM sticks for AMD, because that is the highest officially supported. 1600+ also work, but you might need to set frequencies manually in BIOS and so on.
However, the RAM you linked IS 1333, so you should be fine

That RAM is a VERY BAD choice. No 1333 CL9 kit generic kit requiring 1.65V is a good choice, I find it unacceptable. Generic-spec memory never should require over 1.5V, or something is seriously wrong with the IC quality.

Noting the rebate requirement for that price (arrives in 6-8 weeks, very long time) and that TigerDirect does not ship this RAM for free, this kit ($78 shipped and no rebates) should be a much better deal. It is 1333 AND CL7, and at 1.5V. At most you may have to manually set the timings. Plus G.Skill is a very reputable, trustable brand among members here.

You should take an M5A88-V EVO over that M4A88. It is basically the same board but with an AM3+ socket, supporting the next-gen AMD FX Series processor slated for July-August release, for the same price.

If you don't mind swapping over to an ATI card, this HD 5830 will significantly outperform a 550 Ti for a significantly lower price of $110 shipped.

sweet, thanks for the heads up on the RAM, and for the welcome to this site...it's great to get input so quick.

while i'm picking everyone's brains, how does this case look to you all - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147153

for the case, i don't need fancy, i just need everything to fit, and stay below it's own personal melting point.

As far as overclocking anything goes, I know nothing. I don't know much about BIOS either, other than what some google searches taught me.

The idea for this is to run Crysis, fallout 3, and eventually Skyrim on decent settings.

Oh, and I'm a self-professed audio snob. If anyone knows of a stable MoBo with a quality on-board sound card (yes I realize that is rare) or if they know of a good sound card stand-alone, i'm all ears.

This is it.

The video card not worth it like he said the 5830 will out do the 550 ... i would go for a 6850 as they scale better CX or a single 560 gtx or 6950 if u just want one card but if you cant aford it in budget then i would do the 5830 even though the 6850 better card

The case is pretty good. Have you chosen a PSU? There are some good combo deals with that case and Rosewill Green PSUs (which have great quality) that I can link you to.

You can also go for the NZXT M59 case, using the promo code NX10SAVE it only costs some $46.74 which is a great deal

I assume you meant power supply? - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...567&CatId=2533

I realize 750 might be overkill, but in this case i figured it would be better to overshoot. if the difference is just obnoxious, and 650 would be fine, I will go that route instead.

Oh, and here's a question that's open-ended - any tricks or tips concerning installing these parts once I get my hands on everything? I'll have a friend with me, but between the two of us we've only ever worked on 2 computers from scratch, so...

I dont know anything about Ultra PSU's, but consider a more efficient and more reputable PSU. Also a modular unit will make the process so much more enjoyable. With that comes a price increase though.

80+ Certified = 80% efficiency
80+ Bronze = 82%
80+ Silver = 85%
80+ Gold = 87%
80+ Platinum = 89%

Sheesh, how I missed that voltage..
xd_1771 is absolutely right, 1.65v for 1333 CL9 is madness.
