internet speed. QoS?

Thread Starter
i asked a friend recently why most of my programs wouldnt use 100% of my internet, like a FTP program will download at 1/2 the speed it should be capable of.

i have a 15mbit connection, and have seen a download from steam max out at 1mbps once.

most of the time i cant download more than 600-700kbps, and my games are limited to 10-15kbps upload and 50-60kbps download during gameplay (closest servers give pings of 50-100 for most games)

my friend said i could set up QoS in my router to set priority for programs. would this help?

i know my connection to the server is limited from the server side, but if i had a 50mbit internet connection i would have better ping right? so why does a better connection on my side increase the limit on server side? and would QoS increase my connection for specific games of my choice

i hate to miss the first shot

i went into my nvidea control panel and changed my first packet setting and my internet speed made a dramatic increase. your connection sounds like it was acting like mine slow and slugish, anyways hope that helps you out.

Not particularly.

What do you get as far as speedtest.net?

Also, QoS simply prioritizes packets. On the WAN you really can't control both sides of the link therefore it may not be as effective as intended. If you have a more serious underlying connectivity problem, QoS will not really resolve such issues.

Quick question while on internet speeds. I DL from steam at around 300kb/s(yes this is horribly slow its the best we get in my area tho). Speedtest.net says i DL at 1.5mb/s, how come i dont get this when DLing games? Also they say our package is 3mb/s, so shouldnt this be my DL speed? Dont really get how it all works, got AT&T DSL if that changes anything

Sorry i cant help with the question above

theres nothing wrong or slowing my internet down, i have no problems with reaching the 600-700mbps download rate for most programs. which thats what speedtest says i get at 50miles

what im saying, if im connecting to a server in counterstrike source thats 50 miles away with my 15mbit connection i will get 80ping. but i have a friend that has a 50mbit connection connecting to the same server 50 miles away getting 40-50 ping. i have a better computer, and im connected with ethernet.

but since it only uses 10-15upload 50-60kbps download on my network, i was wondering if i could turn that up? increasing my connection availability for the server, making my ping better. at least thats how i figure it works

your ISP is probably telling you the speed in megabits, which you have to then divide by 8 (i think?) to receive the megabyte equivalent which is what most download programs measure in

How close is your friend to were you live. Just because you are both 50 miles away from the server doesn't mean that you will get the same ping. His packets could be taking a different route than you packets that just happens to be shorter. There are more variables than just distance from server and internet speed.

If you want to see how your packets are being routed to the server than you can use tracert

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traceroute

Have him do it to and then you can compare the two results that you get.

Internet speed is measured in bits per seconds and download speed are typically measured in bytes per second
1 byte = 8 bits

so 3 Mbps is 3,000,000 bits per second

3,000,000/8 = 375,000 bytes per second = 375Kbps. So roughly about what you are getting.

Can't say why speedtest say 1.5 Mbps
