Laptop plays 720p from video file, but not YouTube!? Inefficient flash player?

Specs:
Intel Pentium M 740 1.73Ghz
512MB DDR2-400 RAM (amount isn't actually a problem here)
Intel 915G (so obviously no GPU acceleration; this GPU runs compiz but that's it, video playback handled thru CPU)
Linux - Ubuntu 11.04 (with a newly compiled & optimized kernel)

MKV or MP4 video file, h.264 video codec (i.e. one of my YouTube video projects) in 720p plays smoothly with CPU usage to spare in VLC media player. However, YouTube (which is basically the same codec, resolution, etc. among other things) 720p does not, it is a slideshow. 480p is smooth. Is flash player seriously that inefficient? This is the latest 10.3 version.

It depends on video compression/decompression and the algorithms to display the picture. Youtube may not be using all of your hardware's instruction set hence being less efficient.

I get the same situation on my netbook:

Atom 1.6ghz
2GB DDR2
GMA 450
Linux Mint 11 (based on 11.04 NattyNarwhal)

720p plays like butter in Gnome-MPlayer when I enable a 2MB cache for it to use, but i'm forced to play Youtube stuffs at 480p. I can watch 720p but I have to OC the Atom to 2ghz.

Definitely inefficient... just loaded it in VLC thru the network play feature and it's smooth as butter. At least I can do that in case ti happens.

MrLinky: I'm surprised Atom can even play 720p, it should be far short of that without any form of GPU acceleration... the Pentium M should be much faster than an Atom at 2Ghz even and play 720p fine

Perhaps my kernel compiled incorrectly, and has something to do with what instruction sets flash player will use to play the file? I'm definitely seeing an improvement in how often the fan has to activate and how the CPU is used with this kernel

I think the integrated GMA450 is stepping in and doing some of the work. I'm watching an episode of My Little Pony on Youtube in 720p as I type... 1.6ghz and the framerate chokes, but 2ghz is just enough.

I'm using Chromium too, if that matters.

The 950 does not accelerate h.264 at all. I've done some reading, and apparently with CoreAVC (and that only) it can playback 720p, with a few kinks here and there; CPU is pegged at 100% the whole time but it plays. Meanwhile on my Pentium M, some 60% CPU is used when playing back from a video file. Flash 720p doesn't play very well, it seems the framerate is half what it's supposed to be, but not a total slideshow apparently

I used to have issues with flash though I dont know if my suggestion will help (or if you have even done it). (I was having jittery videos and browser crashes.) The way I resolved it was by unchecking "Enable Hardware Acceleration." Dont know if you can do the same under ubuntu but you can give it a shot: open a youtube wid>right click vid>settings>untick "enable hardware acceleration"

The graphics hardware does not support hardware acceleration, it shouldn't be enabled, but I'll give it a shot. Thanks.
