I learned nothing that could be used in the real world. I was expecting to learn mysql, php and the sorts but nope. Just the html basics.

When I graduated I knew I was in trouble finding a job. I poked around a bit but with nothing to show for myself I ended up getting a job at the local grocery store. Stuck with it and worked my way up to assistant store manager.

Now the question I have is.. are most web devs self taught? Could I go back to school and maybe try to dig myself out of this hole I got myself into? Or whats the best way to go about this? I just turned 27 and I dont see myself doing the whole grocery bizz for the next 35 years

Unfortunately if you went to one of the Stevens Henegar, Apollo College or even ITT type schools, you really come away with a less than useful skillset unless you have invested a lot of time on your own. As far as I am concerned those schools use predatory practices to trick people into going there for an "Education" and then bilk them for 1000's of dollars a year. They should probably be illegal. I have hired high school students over recent grads for internships because the eduction just isn't there. (For the record I am just bashing the For Profit Colleges here, not the people that go to them and as with everything I am sure there are many exceptions to my experience with them).

That being said, you probably got at least enough of a base education that if you are truly interested in being a web developer and can self learn some skills you could do it. Just come up with some projects that you want to do, get some small business clients to do websites for in your free time, find a family member that needs a website and produce something good and with your degree, the experience you get from doing some actual web development, you will be a hireable asset. Portfolio of at least 1 or 2 actual websites will go a really long way towards getting a job in an entry level position.

Hope that help

I freelance in Pittsburgh and Erie and the surrounding areas. I make 20-several hundred an hour depending on what needs done. I can do some back and some front stuff so I am well rounded in that respect. I generally deal with smaller companies looking for a change or clients looking to start out in the web world. I charge by the hour for small jobs or by the task for larger jobs. I set my own prices by project/site/client so I can make alot more or alot less depending.

I make alot more here than I did in Vermont. I lived near Montpelier and made very little doing way more work. I am quite pleased with my client turnout and overall work turnaround lately.

I think starting for web stuff is like 15-20 or so.

A web developer/designer's salary is roughly around 64,000$-76,000$ a year. But there are also per project basis, it depends on how good you are and experience. Even if your a new comer but if you got the right skill and talent then l'm pretty sure you will earn big. thumb.gif
