Rig Fixes

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
I have decided with the extra funds coming in from the sale of my spare parts and also the money that I will be getting for my birthday and so forth that I would clean up my rig a little so then I can use it for the next few years until I build a nice rig before I leave China to prepare me for college in Australia. I encode quite a bit of video (DVD ---> iPod), use Photoshop and also play games (the most intense of which is SC2). Therefore all upgrades will be focused on improving my performance in those areas. Nevertheless here is my idea of what the end product will look like...

Intel Core i5-2300 ---> Intel Core i5-2500K
I currently have the i5-2300 and I would like the extra overclocking headroom to improve my Photoshop performance and encoding performance, as well as the fact that I miss not being able to overclock.

ASRock P67 Pro3 ---> B3
I do already have this board, however just recently the SATA 2 ports failed and it now in a weeks time I am going on a vacation for like 7 weeks, so I will just wait until I get back to get it replaced. Also the integrated sound card on this thing is amazing! I can hear no difference between the Realtek ALC892 and the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio, which is why I am selling it to my friend as he like BFBC2, which benefits from X-Fi chips...

Team Elite 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3/1600 ---> Team Elite 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR3/1600
I think I would appreciate the extra 4GB of RAM for when I am multi tasking and editing large Photoshop files. I mean just recently for my art class my teacher wanted an 8in.x10in. piece @ 300dpi! That lead to a resolution of 3000x2400... And I was doing that on my school laptop, which has 2GB of RAM, which was just hell!!!

Asus Radeon HD 5850
I bought this card February 2010, and since then it has been my little baby and I can't even think about selling it. Even if I wanted to sell it, there would be no reason to as it proves to be an excellent card for Photoshop even at high resolutions and also maxes out all of my games comfortably, and I can't see myself getting off SC2 or TF2 even in the next 2 years or so...

G.Skill Phoenix Pro 60GB
This was probably my smartest upgrade and it is still able to hold all of my OS, all of programs (including Photoshop) and even all of my Steam games...

4 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 320GB in RAID 5
This setup is great as I don't need too much HDD space and this thing has MORE than enough room to hold all of my files as well as my non-Steam games. Also this setup is pretty fast and also very safe so I can load my important files quickly without the fear of loosing them...

LG GH22NS50
Its a 22x DVD burner... Enough said...

Cooler Master Silent Pro 600W
I know a lot of people bag out CM PSU's, however this model is actually pretty darn good. It is overpriced, sure, but since I already have it there is no point in buying a new one. It handles all of my components with Watts to spare and also has very low ripple, resulting in long jeopardy for my components.

Cooler Master 690 II
Epic case... Enough said...

Stock CPU Cooler ---> Some nice CPU Cooler... + Arctic Silver MX-4
My top choice would be the Thermalright Silver Arrow, however the store that I shop at has limited stock in terms of CPU Coolers so I will get the best I can get, and the MX-4 thermal paste which I have should make any model I get even better!

Assorted Case Fans ---> Akasa Apache
I have two of these fans already and I have found that they are of really good quality. They are really silent and they can also push some nice CFM...

In conclusion, that means that on the components aspect I will need to purchase the following items; Intel Core i5-2500K, Team Elite 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3/1600, Nice CPU Cooler, Akasa Apache. The only upgrade that I am planning the make on the peripheral side is that of changing my monitor Dell E198WFP ---> 24" 1080p... Anyways here are the questions I have for you guys...
  • What do you think of the final build? Do you have any suggestions?
  • Would the upgrade to the new mointor be worth it?
Thank You for looking at my plans and any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!! I have a little treat for you guys, which are some works that I did in Photoshop for art class. I attached them to the post and don't worry, these aren't the 3000x2400 versions, I resized them to 750x600... Enjoy

The E198WFP is an epic monitor, but if your working with Photoshop, the bigger the better. It looks very solid, I love the Starcraft II project You won't have to touch the GPU for a few years if they're maxing out your games comfortably now, and 2500k's are absolute beasts, even stock.

Any other suggestions? I mean is this build balanced and something to be proud to look back on as one hell of a build in a couple years?

I can tell you, from my PC experience, that is one heck of a rig, I'd be proud of it! Only thing I could possibly think of upgrading to is a 2600k, but you really don't need it. If you had a board that could do Crossfire, I'd pick up another 5850 down the road, but it looks like yours has only one?

Yea I know I regret getting a board with only one GPU slot, but after I finish these upgrades, I'll just run it until I feel as though I need a new rig...

You might want too consider a chip with hyper thread,as that is what encoding really benefits from.

My dog ate my 790FX-GD70, so I'm down to a single slot as well. You shouldn't need to do any upgrades for at least a year, maybe replace your RAID 5 array with a little more space if it fills. I looked at similar boards, and the ASRock P67 Extreme4 is a really good deal, possibly selling your current board and picking one up when you feel games aren't what they used to be (at least that's what I'd keep in mind).

Enjoy the rig
