[cnet] What is a Windows 8 PC?

Qualcomm chimed in this week, saying it will build quad-core Snapdragon processors for Windows 8 devices, in addition to the dual-core chips it is beginning to supply now for tablets like HP's upcoming TouchPad.

"This will require high-performing, low-power processors...with features like 3G and 4G wireless wide area network (WWAN) connectivity," Qualcomm said in its Windows 8 statement Wednesday.

What will a Windows 8 PC be? A few rough ideas:

A 2.5GHz quad-core ARM chip-based Windows 8 tablet?
Newfangled Windows 8 tablet-centric hybrid with slider keyboard?
Motorola Atrix smartphone-with-laptop-dock kind of device?
Tried-and-true clamshell laptop sporting a high-performance ARM chip?

They really used the word "Newfangled" in a news article?

Considering the fact that Windows 8 will natively support ARM as well as x86 it can and will have a multiple of different form factors. Nothing shocking here.

Is anyone else getting sick of the fact that everyone and their mother is calling this a windows skin on top of windows 7? This is an ALPHA build of windows 8 that they previewed (7985 to be specific). It still hasn't even reached beta. To throw it into perspective, it is only 26 builds higher than the leaked 7959 windows 8 build. The main presentation was to show off what they've been doing in terms of tablet and touch, it also happens to run on desktop pcs, which they also stressed, specifically to hush all hardcore windows users. That's all i got from the conference. And they are basically telling you to wait until the BUILD conference to get all the IMPORTANT details. Why are people so dense?

It's just hard too fathom a full blown desktop operating system that can run on a phone. Those small portable devices aren't even close too needing the functionality of a desktop.

+1

Windows 8 is still at the Milestone 3 stage of development, meaning Alpha. The code is still far from complete as are the various API's. Microsoft have only shown off a small fraction of the OS, there is still a whole lot more to be seen, much more.

We won't be seeing near Beta code until the BUILD conference in September.

Its also worth noting that Build 7985 isn't exactly a new compile either, internally they are a bit further on.
In Progress...

Exactly.

I doubt MS will deploy Windows 8 to desktop systems with the version they were showing off. I'd be willing to bet the use the same kernal and keep code compatible between the two, but offer reduced services, and a touch friendly UI for the handheld version.
