Bought a Xeon L5518, can't find any info on it? - Page 2

If you can get the 221mhz baseclock you could set the memory multi to 8x ~1768mhz, should be achievable. The high baseclock will also give you insane memory speeds. biggrin.gif

I doubt his ram was holding him back. You only need DDR-1270 to get 3.6Ghz with a 17x multiplier.

I wouldn't expect to get more than 3.6-3.8 out of the chip.

Lower multiplier usually implies a higher stress on other components, because you have to run the reference clock that much higher to achive the same speed.

Now on LGA-1366 you can reduce the multipliers of most everything else, but only so far. Your QPI bus will be running very high once you get into the mid 3GHz ranges.

That's a result of the low power nature of the chip.

Lower TDP means less of a difference between core and case temp. TJMax is likely the same.

221MHz is the practical upper limit on BCLKs on most decent LGA-1366 setups.

Odd multipliers also tend to OC the best so you are likely going to be using that 17x turbo multiplier. So, 17x221 = 3760MHz.
ok, nice to know... I'll be on the lookout for a good CPU(golden chip perhaps) to replace this one in the coming months then smile.gif

Should be able to hit that on all accounts biggrin.gif

Note that the chip has two QPI busses, so if you had a dual processor board, it would work in one.

Should also be able to get at least what you paid for it, if you do decide to sell it.

Awesome, not that I'll ever need that many cores lol. Nice to know, I'll be looking on OCN for a chip this time round.... should be a few golden chips around smile.gif

How is the l5518? I see that it's now in your sig, was 3 ghz the max you could hit or just max on such low volts? There are a few of these on ebay now for pretty cheap, looks promising smile.gif. I'm also wondering how many x58 boards support xeon, most don't officially support them but I've heard of them working (though not much info about this proc).

, Thanks

Signed up just for this eh? Its a brilliant chip, as long as you don't mind the crazy low multiplier and 4ghz pretty much being out of the realm of possibility(although 3ghz is fast enough for pretty much anything you'd throw at it in this day and age).

As for X58 boards supporting it, well my board runs it just fine(recognised it and everything), I would contact support of your boards manufacturer before purchasing though since it is a very unusual chip to use with a desktop motherboard. Also, I'm not using it anymore (redface.gif), got a i7 920 for $5 more... tbh I'm more impressed by the xeon tongue.gif

Thanks for reply smile.gif. Did you attempt to go any higher than 3 ghz? The way I see it any upgrade whether it's 2500k, i5 760, 920 will all be plenty fast for what I do, it would kind of be cool to have a unique system unlike a 2500k rig that 4/5 people have wink.gif. I'm assuming cooling is never really an issue with this chip which is also cool. Just realized bclk would limit it to 3.5 absolute max, does turbo boost scale with overclocking?

The max multi with turbo is 17x, some people thought I could get to 4ghz with lots of tweaking but I thought it wasn't worth it, way too much trouble imo. And yeah, temps are never a problem, didn't go over 55c and the TJmax is a good 10c higher than the i7's thumb.gif

Sorry about the late reply, working 10 hours a day and being in the complete opposite timezone makes it hard for me to get back to you quickly lol
