Cousin's new build

Thread Starter
I'm building my cousin a new pc. He has a $1500 budget. He'll probably be getting everything off of newegg but we do live within driving distance of a microcenter. He will be using it mostly for gaming. Is this good?

i7 2600k (or i5 2500k?)
GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD4-B3 (or a p8p67 pro?)
Corsair Dominator 8gb 1600mhz
HAF 932 case
Corsair 750tx
MSI Twin Frozr II GTX 580
Coolermaster hyper 212+ (?)
A 1tb harddrive and a dvd drive.

Total comes out to around $1540 shipped. Should I change anything?

If it's a gamer, the i5 will be more than enough for him. Also 8 gigs of RAM might be a bit overkill. Otherwise I think it looks good.

Yea i guess i'll change the heatsink change the motherboard to the asus. Is the g.skill ram better than the dominator or does that not matter? I don't think he's planning on overclocking. Also is that gtx 580 good? I picked it cause i didn't know which to pick.

GTX 580 should last a few years, being top of the line, and the Twin Frozr is a great cooler. With the HAF's airflow it should stay nice and chilly. The RAM won't matter if he's gonna OC, clock rates are clock rates. I'd pick the GSkill because I prefer the aesthetics. The Hyper 212 is nice because right now I think it fits every socket in use from 775 - 1155 and AM2 - AM3+, not sure about the Thermalright.

honestly it's a solid build. If it's for gaming the i5 will be more than enough as for the people saying 8gb overkill, 4gb ram and 8gb aren't that far from price...i say go for it.

The G Skill RAM is cheaper for pretty much similar performance. I've never sugested Dominators as they alwasy seem to be overpriced. Even Corsair Vengeance 8GB sticks will do fine.

The MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr II is a good card.

Can make use of SSD caching going with a Z68 chipset motherboard:

make sure that the tx750 is of 'version 2' (not sure if they still sell the version 1).

Looks very nice, I would go with 4GB and use the extra money to upgrade the case to maybe a HafX, although there aren't that many differences between the 932 and the hafx besides airflow and the black interior. Maybe upgrade to a 850 watt psu if he ever decides that he needs sli?

I don't think he's planning on adding a ssd drive but if he is I'll tell him to get a z68 motherboard.
