I personally don't see the point in something looking pretty if it isn't going to provide some benefit in productivity or functionality.
i wouldnt exactly call kde stable if you want stable you run debian in CLI only, you have to TRY to break that

@ChronoBodi did you install the ubuntu satanic edition theme i quite like that...
Kinda meh now...

wat

Gnome 2 is more stable than KDE 4, it's been around for years.

In the end of the day, stability is kind of a moot point, as all the apps can be replaced. It's more about user preference

To all you Gnome lovers I've had nothing but problems with it so that's why I don't view it as stable. If something has minor glitches I can deal with because they end up working (KDE4); but when it crashes and takes some functions with it I take offense (Gnome died and took the panels back when I depended on GUI's to get around). On just about every distro I tried Gnome crashed on the first boot in ways that made life hell.

But what I was suggesting was for the OP if he wanted the latest and greatest without worrying about crashing DE/WMs while still having over the top eye candy he should look to Kubuntu or anything with KDE4.5/4.6 or later.

The only app I consider a must have on Ubuntu is Ubuntu Tweak...Kind of like CCleaner/Tuneup Utilities for Ubuntu.

uh, i don't know what you did. did you install ubuntu satanic edition? there are a lot of ridiculous distros out there.

i'm at work now and the download page on ubuntu.com is blocked here. they should have a section to download older versions.

just look for version 10.10.

Ubuntu Tweak is a great program to help get things set up. Google it.

getdeb.net can be a useful site as well to find lots of apps.

for music i love Banshee.

Conky is a useful tool to get a lot of information reported to your desktop.

Thunderbird or Evolution for mail.

there's really a ton. just play around in the Ubuntu Software Center. Look for things you want and try it out. You're in Linux now, explore and have fun, you're free. =)

Linux Mint is also a viable and friendly place to start.

Is this on your netbook? Isn't Kubuntu like treacle?

One problem with openbox; lots of work to customize things. Or you end up putting things from XFCE in and sometimes the panel crashes. Nothing nearly as bad as gnome.

@chemicalfan: I've run KDE on the netbook just fine. I have however started to prefer LXDE/openbox on it because they are bit lighter on things but either of the two make me happy. LXDE just requires a bit more work than KDE to get everything I need.

Linux != Windows. You have a package manager so you can AVOID downloading strange packages from websites.

Code:
sudo apt-get install banshee, thunderbird, conky #you get the picture
