Another "recommend me a DSLR camera" thread.. - Page 2

At that price point, you're looking at a Canon Rebel T2i, or T1i, or the Nikon D3000 or D3100. The D3100 has video as well as a few other updates to the camera. Comes with a starter 18-55 lens.

You can typically find a good deal on them on craigslist or your favorite 2nd hand site. A lot of people pick them up and decide shortly after that they don't want to dive into it. Their loss is your gain.

I have, love, and recommend the D3100. The auto-focus on video isn't "amazing," and that's my only complaint for a starter DSLR. Good Luck!

Good luck!

I'd suggest you look through Canon's CLP if you don't mind getting a refurbished DSLR.

All you do is send them a broken/out of warranty camera and you save some money on their refurbished DSLR's.

I just purchased a T2i with 18-55mm kit lens and it cost me $540 shipped. They also have an XS for like $320.

I already have over 2500 actuation count and my camera is working fine. I love it!

I'm definitely going to +1 this suggestion.

Right now I have a Canon Powershot point and shoot, and honestly, I have been very happy with it's quality. Not to be a fanboy, but if there are recommendations for a Canon, I will probably go with that unless people say their DSLRs are bad. Being able to do video would be nice but is not a requirement. My budget is $400, $500 TOPS. Any thought? Thanks!

Why not consider an MILC? It's the best of both worlds - small body but large sensor. It's an emerging market but there are extremely high quality ones out. I believe the best right now is the Sony Nex5 or 7.

As a 50D user, I think they're worth the wait whistle.gif

The T2i is another good option though. You miss out on the xxD bells and whistles (Rear thumb wheel for dedicated aperture control, top quick-access option buttons, direct AF selection, larger viewfinder), but the T2i comes with a better image sensor capable of cleaner high ISO shots and, of course, video. If you're new to the DSLR world, the T2i would be a great place to start.

They were out of stock on that one too, that was my second choice, lol. mad.gif

Yeah, it seems like CLP has really low stock, just like most places right now. Probably looking at a few more months at least before stock returns to more normal levels.

So it looks like I'm going to go with this advice, and just wait it out. I didn't really realize the price of those suckers. So I'd rather have some more wiggle room so I'm not stuck with someone I don't really like. Thanks everyone! I'll rep everyone when I get the chance..

Canon DSLR's are good. Usually just comes down to whichever you are more comfortable using.

Stick it out with your Powershot a little longer, spend less time in Aggieville. Use the savings to increase your budget a little.... and put that Canon Loyalty Program to use for a T2i with kit lens. http://www.overclock.net/13645203-post9.html

Canon XS/1000D or Nikon D3000/D40. If you get the Canon keep an eye out for deals on the 1.8 50mm and 55-250, probably the first two lenses you'll want to get for it.
