Is there something I'm missing? What's the difference between the 6990 and this 6970x2 besides clock speeds? And if it's only the clock speeds, what about the difference between the 6970x2 and Crossfiring two 6970s? The only main difference I can see is the price, which is coming out to $450 now...

Which brings another question.. If the only differences are clock speeds and price, will this make the 6990 obsolete?

EDIT: I just noticed that $450 price point was for the 6870, not the 6970. As of right now, I'm still completely confused as to what the significance of these two cards are.

The 6870x2 will provide ASUS Ares performance for 449, and the 6970x2 is an enhanced 6990 with better cooling and a higher VRM count. Probably also does a nice overclock.

I'd hardly call it obsolete. It just won't be the king of the hill anymore. It'll be more like the queen of the hill.

If 6970 x2 = 700$
Then order it asap on your favorite online retailer!
uhmmmm Interesting, so we should see them @newegg in July ... probably costing $750 the 6970x2.

And in Nov-Dec we will see the 7000 series already out, 28nm>40nm all the way, and like it has always been, the best single GPU 7k series will have the same performance as two 6K gen cards mostly from the shrinkage.

So dont know if I should jump on this or not.

Considering tri/quad fire on 6870 hasnt been an option at all until this comes out, i'm sure there are tons of driver refinements to be done before it's worth it at all.
