So if the iPad 3 came with a 1280x800 display all of the apps in the app store wouldn't have black borders?

Or will they have to go 2048x1536 and do the double scaling because Apple uses 1st year software engineers to write their code?

Because of proper scaling Android tablets have access to over 300000 apps, which makes the iPad's 90000 pretty insignificant.

I'd think that if they had the framework they would have used it. I can't see Steve Jobs passing up the excuse to say "300000+ iPhone apps 'just work' on the iPad".

Just because Apple says its a special display doesnt make it one. Its a normal display with a higher resolution.
It's a term and you know what I mean. I never said it was any different. It's not so simple to have a 2048x1536 resolution display; the iPad would need a more powerful GPU, and the screens would need to be reasonably priced as well as having the actual technology (screens with that resolution) available.

Yes, it would have black borders.

They didn't include it because there's a big difference between having a phone app that scales (like Android, not like iOS) to a slate's screen, and having a app designed for a slate (functionality due to screen real-estate, etc.)

Why does it have to be 2048x1536

It could be 1280x800, 1280x1024, 1440x900, 1680x1050, 1600x1200 etc...

So I can pick ANY Android app designed originally for any Android phone, and it will look AS GOOD on the Motorola Xoom as it does on the phone? Is that what you're telling us? I'm asking because I dont know. Personally I don't use any iPhone apps on my iPad because scaled up, they look terrible and the interface doesn't usually transfer well. Hard to describe....it's just awkward.

Also, many apps in the App Store have a little + next to them indicating they can be used on both devices (without the black border on the iPad). Many apps designed for the iPhone wouldnt even translate that well to a larger screen.

Yes.

Android apps don't specify a specific resolution. They just work with dpi and aspect ratio, so the physical size of the UI elements are the same physical size.

If you were to load the stock Froyo browser on the Xoom it would look just as good as it does on the Galaxy S. The address bar will be the same size, but the content area will be much larger on the Xoom.

Pretty much every Android app will do this. There are a few apps that use a fixed layout, resulting in black borders, but this is considered bad practice, and they are few and far between.

So if this is the case, then why I have read so much hub-bub about the lack of tablet apps for Android tablets? If it works as well as you claim, this is a complete non-issue right?

It's also worth noting that all iPhone apps DO work fine on the iPad, you just have the border, which some people may or may not mind. But for most cases this is also a non-issue, as there are plenty of apps in the iPad's lineup. I think the bigger problem is with developers that make you pay for the same app across different devices. Like Plants vs Zombies. Same identical game, but the iPad version is double the cost of the iPhone version. Whereas with Pages, I pay $10 and I can get the iPad version and iPhone version only paying once.

Thread Starter
lol so much misinformation

1. They're implementing software/hardware/iCloud, things that have been around for years (including themselves having them, or support for them, such as dropbox on mac), but their own version.

2. There is no current service, for free, that is seemless and requires little to no set up. Sure, I can set these services up on my pc/mac, but they take time/knowledge. The majority of users don't have the time/tech skill. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE STUPID. (Do you know as much about being a nurse as a nurse knows about windows OS?). It's just ease, free ease that requires simple work.

3. It takes time to work on things. Android historically kils battery life, crashes AS OFTEN as iOS, and etc, even though it has the same/less/more features. They're not copying, they're innovating. For the better is PURELY subjective.

Lets have 3 cheers for competition and consumer awareness, eh?
