Retail copies integrate with Steam whether you want it to or not.

I have it and love the game, it has it's flaws but the good far outweighs the bad. Especially since the last patch. If you don't really likle strategy, i'd suggest giving the demo a go first.

1) Does managing units, buildings, taxes, etc between turns feel entertaining or cumbersome?
2) Is the persistent general in online mode feel like a unique feature or is it not very customizable?
Keep in mind I'm a big Starcraft II player with some experience in other strategy like Supreme Commander 1 and Civ 3.
It definetly pushed my system and killed it. lol Forced me to get an i7 to stabalize my FPS at max settings.
1) Managing buildings and units are less involved then previous versions of Total War. It seems like less work then previously when dealing with your buildings and once you build a unit, when they take casualties they automatically start replacing dead automatically if your in friendly territory. Nothing you need to do. Taxes, outside of temporaily exempting an unruly province from having to pay. Not much you have to do there(unless you want to change it around, which I don't).
2) Granted I don't play the online part of the game(not that good at it, lol), I did mess around with my avatar. You can customize his clan banner, all his armor, his face, armor color, horse, and alot more. So there is alot of room for customization if you play online.
If you enjoyed the demo, you will probably love the game then. Especially since you would be getting into it after the DX11 patch. Which was awesome btw.
