Thread Starter
hey all,

im having a prob with one of my 4890 cards and will replace it.

was thinking of an upgrade...preferably ati coz of the price to performance factor but would really mind the green either.

what would be a worthy upgrade from my ASUS 4890 TOP in crossfire setup?
please give reasons if possible.

thnx

Pretty much a 5870 if you can still find them new/used for a good price. Otherwise 6870 or 6970, you can also check out GTX 480 or GTX 570. I swapped from XFIRE 4870's to one 5870 quite awhile ago and never looked back.

You can check 5850 as well. They are pretty good cards, they consume low power.

Yup,
I went from a 4890 cf setup to this 560ti (went nvidia because BC2 loves the green team) my fps went from mid 90 avg to 110.
A single card is so much better, no weird glitches or problems anymore..

No I dont think so.

I would go with a GTX 580 or ATI 6970 if you could afford one. I dont think a GTX 570 is that much better than x-fire 4890's so I wont recommend a side grade.

4890 crossfire is faster than a 5870.
Get a 6950 and unlock to a 6970. You can add another 6950 down the road

No it is single GPU but triple slot cooler. Im pretty sure the only new ATI dual GPU right now is the 6990 which is very expensive. Its a great card dont get me wrong but I dont think it is enough of an upgrade for you. I think it would be on par with crossfire 4890's . I could be wrong though...

I doubt XFIRE 4890's are even close in performance with the 6990's; there's a reason why it costs more. The 6870 has performance very close to the 5870. So 6950, 6970 and 6990 is going to be a lot faster than XFIRE 4890. While dual 4890's might have performance slightly better than one 5870 the minimum FPS is still going to give the 5xxx/6xxx series cards a slight advantage. Sure XFIRE 4890 can get higher frames than 5870 but what good is that when its minimum frame is lower?

Most also do not consider the complications and problems that come with XFIRE configurations. Sometimes XFIRE works fantastic and you get great frame rates in games, sometimes they drop out on you for no reason and you're running at half your FPS. Many games still do not support multiple videocards so you'll never see a performance gain. If the OP wants to upgrade to get rid of his XFIRE configuration the 5870/6870 would offer performance close to that of his current configuration. Dual cards are great when they work correctly. Scaling for dual cards is a lot better on 5xxx/6xxx series cards than previous 3xxx/4xxx generation.

Otherwise the OP can get 6950 and unlock it or get a 6970 which is 5870's replacement or get 6990. GTX 570 and 580 can be an option but price maybe an issue if the OP is not willing to pay the price. The GTX 4xx and 5xx series will also give a higher minimum FPS in games.
