Possible to use car speakers in series for home audio?

This has probably been struck down numerous times as car speakers have 4 ohm impedance, but 2 speakers wired in series would double the ohms to 8 making them perfectly compatible with a home stereo.

Am interested because I believe car speakers, with the tweeter being directly over the woofer will yield the best possible near field listening experience and be ultra compact.

Aside from not sounding as "good" as real bookshelfs, could you see any other downsides besides cancelling each other out if they were placed in the same enclosure? Having 2 separate enclosures, I could swivel them around and get a good combination of direct and reflected sound.

I know car speakers are designed for enclosed spaces but with a powerful enough amp (a REAL receiver amp) the speakers could be driven closer to their full potential.

What do you think....fail idea or not?

What amp/receiver do you have?

None yet, but I was thinking along the lines of a basic home theater one. But I figure $50-$80 a pair, per channel. Might as well just get a set of bookshelf speakers instead for the same price.

Aweir, I think you have possibly answered your own question in your OP. I would go bookshelf as well, rather than have car speakers for your home.

How much are you spending on bookshelves again?
