Asus Xonar DX Questions

Thread Starter
Good evening, everyone. Just received Asus Xonar DX and would like to get some tips and suggestions how to set up and use it properly. First of all, my setup:

Audio Card: Asus Xonar DX
Speakers: Logitech X-540
1st Headphones: Razer Piranha (use them mostly for gaming and music)
2nd Headphones: Sennheiser HD 205 (use rarely with iPod when on the move)

Speakers are hooked at the back, while Razer headphones in the front jacks.

Impression is very good, especially after built in VIA chip on my mobo. The sound in headphones improved a lot! I especially liked the Dolby Headphone feature, despite its criticism on OCN. However, the difference is not so striking on Logitech speakers (I actually could hardly feel any difference), which is quite obvious due to their price.

Now the questions.
  1. Am I right, that everytime I want to listen to music in, I switch Audio Channel to 2 Channels? And if I want to play some game (say Witcher 2), I need to switch to 8 Channels? What stops me from always using 8 Channels instead?
  2. What sample rate should I use? Does it matter? I noticed no difference between them.
  3. 7.1 Virtual Speaker Shifter option is only for 7.1 speakers?
  4. What is Dolby Pro Logic IIx and should I use it with my setup?
  5. Should I use Dolby Headphone in games or only for music and movies?
  6. Are DSP Modes useful at all? I tried them a bit but it seemed like that sound was only getting worse.
  7. Have anyone experienced this problem? When I switch between tracks in iTunes, I get a small "bump", which is quite annoying. It doesn't happen when tracks just flow one by one. Only when I change tracks myself.
  8. Also, is Smart Volume feature any good? Think it sounds better with it.
  9. Came up with one more and hopefully final question. How does VoiceEX work? What does it do in games?

Is there anything else I could do to maximise the experience with my new audio card? Buying new speakers is not an option at this time unfortunately. Plus, I mostly use headphones anyway. Speakers are mostly for movies and occasional music when I am not near PC.

Sorry for noob questions. I am new to audio and stuff. But I learn fast tongue.gif

Thanks in advance for your time and suggestions! smile.gif

For your X540s, Output is 5.1, Audio Channel is 2 for music and 6 for gaming.

Sample Rate should be no higher than 48khz for the most part.

7.1 Virtual Speaker Shift off.

Dolby Pro Logic IIx off.

Dolby Headphones for gaming and you don't even need them really.

DSP modes are pretty awful.

I have no opinion on SVM really. Theoretically it should be off though.

You'll want to use this EQ for music and gaming with the X540s. It makes everything sound better on them. Apparently the X540s need severe EQing to sound all right.

Try it out and see if you like it.

SVM is useless for me ,it makes the music sound crappier.

The DSP modes are also useless ,at least for me.It seems that you are forced to use an environment at all times ,you can t disable them (as you can see in the picture ).
To overcome this i use ASIO while listening to music.

You can t up-mix "properly" (like Creative CMSS does) if you want 8 channels from 2.If you use the virtualization to up mix the sound you will get a strange and annoying environment envelop that mutates the sound.

Because the panel is so useless i rarely use it.I open it when i switch to headphones and back to speakers. When using ASIO most of the control panel stuff is overrided (thanks God).

I do not want to sound self righteous, but why ask for a opinion of others on something you already have? Why not try it for yourself and decide what you like and what not? Why a need to have others saying what is good and what isn't has ultimately it's a matter of taste?
Anyway, good luck.

This thread ought to help: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/475872/asus-xonar-stx-st-and-headphones-a-basic-guide#post_6451613

Setting the DSP mode to Hi-fi will disable any environment effect and more.
