5870 Vapor-X issue

Thread Starter
Hey guys, hows it going.
I've recent built this system (got the parts pre-owned for a good price). I have a 5870 vapor-x edition, oced from 850/1250 - 915/1315.

Also using a Q9550, OCed from 2.83GHz to 3.6GHz. Seems to be stable under several bouts of IBT.

I seem to be getting random grey screens in game, random driver crashes, and online videos (especially youtube) keep causing my drivers to crash also. I've reverted from 11.5 to 11.2, still does the same thing. Downgrade to earlier flash, no dice. Revert back to stock clocks, does the same thing. It is a heavy videocard, and it isn't bracketed into my case (i have the bracket though. Not sure if the weight on the PCIe slot could do it.

The games hold up better, sometimes i get no issues. I've noticed it in crysis 2 more than say, SC2. Could it be my CPU OC?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

you need to completely wipe out and re-install gpu drivers, there are some guides to doing this that involve driver sweepers and what not but the best thing to do imho would be to do it on a fresh re-install of windows

the weight on the pci-e slot should not be an issue

I already went the Driver Sweeper route to no avail. Looks like i'll have to format =(, i would like this a little more if i had a seperate OS drive. I'm pretty barebones right now.

Yea wipe the drivers completely. If that doesn't help lower your VRAM to like 600MHz and see if it still happens. If no then it could be a VRAM issue.

I will not be happy if it's the card itself.

Sounds like me a month ago. Do you have any GPU or CPU monitoring software installed and running? Do you have Fraps running when you play?

I use Fraps sometimes, and i use MSI Afterburner, HW Monitor, GPU-z. You name it, i probably have it somewhere. (My buddy hooked me up with all his OC tools after i sold my old PC without backing anything up..haha). I've been lowering the clocks by 10 every time i notice it. But even at the stock 875/1250, Youtube still crashes the drivers

Ok, now try playing a game and turn all those off. Anything that monitors CPU or GPU, off. And if it crashes on youtube, try going to beta drivers. Beta drivers are worked best for my card and also use the newest BIOS for the card as well.
