Clarification on vertical/horizontal mounting fans

Thread Starter
I'm confused on which layout of fans is horizontal and vertical. I've always wondered if it's describing the way the air flows, or the way the fan is lying. Is the demonstration below accurate? Or is it the opposite way?

The demonstration image below is a shot of a Corsair 650D case laying on it's side. The larger 200mm fan is mounted on top, and the 120mm fan is mounted on the back side.

tivK6.jpg

Is this correct?

I know this is probably a very silly question, but I wanted to be absolutely sure to pick and mount my fans correctly (sleeve bearing, etc.)

Thanks!

The above pic describes the way air is flowing, not the way the fans are mounted. When the case is flipped upright, the top 200mm fan is mounted horizontally and the rear 120mm fan is mounted vertically.

So all top mounted fans should not be sleeve bearing, correct?

In most cases, yes. But some larger fans (200mm+) are only sleeve bearing.

Great thanks for the clarification. If anyone looks at this thread in the future (through search, etc.) my image above is WRONG. gymenii gave appropriate advice.

However, many sleeve bearing fans that cannot tolerate orientations where they point their air up, do just fine with their airflow pointed down.

For example, here is a Kaze Maru with airflow pointed down:

It's horrible with its airflow pointed up.

Hey, I was thinking about switching one of my blowholes into an intake fan...How's the dust like in your case & is cooling better like that?

I use this:

Top_filter_001.png

on top, and other filters in front. Dust isn't too bad. Eventually I'll Velcro a 140mm filter on my side intake.

Edit: Cools 3c better than top exhaust. Others have seen a 5c improvement.

Wow, that seems pretty good. My setup is alittle different because I have two blowhole fans right next to each other. Thinking about having one as an exhaust and one as an intake. I'm thinking my video cards will suck up the cool air so they won't cancel each other out (inverted mobo case).

What case are you using? That Azza Hurrican 2000 has a standard mb mounting.
