6990 oc bios

Thread Starter
Hello gang!

Core clock and TDP ceiling aside, is there anything else that the BIOS switch does?

If I just overclock a 6990 to 6970 clocks using MSI Afterburner, should the performance be the same as using the OC BIOS?

Thanks!

I beleive there is a difference in voltage.

Edit : But you could very well adjust that with MSI Afterburner as well.

Max TDP and core/memory clocks are changed, but also the core voltage is going to 1.175v.

You should use the OC BIOS, since you will be raising your Powertune limit also. If you use the stock BIOS, you will get throttling if you OC with Afterburner.

So use the OC BIOS, then OC the card with Afterburner if you don't want to get any throttling with the lower Powertune limit of the stock BIOS.

I cant, it BSODs everytime I use the OC BIOS.

Also, I don't know how the card would throttle without the temperatures spiking. I think you are using the term incorrectly here.

Powertune is based on TDP, so if you reach the max TDP, Powertune will ''throttle'' the card down. Max TDP values are different on both BIOS (375W vs none).

Good read about that here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4209/a...le-card-king/4

You shouldnt' BSOD by only switching to the OC BIOS. Are you sure you don't have problems with your PSU? Not using the good rails? Not powerful enough?

I ran dual 580s not too long ago without any problems. It is always a possibility that my TX850 is starting to fail on me, thus causing those BSODs.

However, although the max TDP is raised, that doesn't mean that my power consumption is much higher in 2D clocks. If it were to BSOD, I would think it would only happen if my GPU was at full load.

Thanks for that link.

There is a known issue with AB that is causing unstability in voltage and causing BSOD please uninstall AB and try again make sure you have the latest drivers and retest . I had the same problem until i uninstalled AB
