If you have some need to make your files contiguous then sure but most times you don't need to bother.

Is your external data changing often? Personally, I do not see the reason to start shifting data around if it is working fine.

Any tips as to why he should? There is no point in senselessly shifting data around and risking possible data loss(extremely unlikely but still possible).

Most externals are used for large data storage. So unless his files are fragmented so bad that it actually suffers a performance loss..

I play alot of video's and music off it so I thought that it would just improve/maintain performance since I am putting alot on it right now.

Reading the data from your drive will not cause it to be fragmented to high heaven. At most your file access times are being updated and the data itself is still in place since the first time you placed it, assuming the HDD did not have to remap any sectors.

Do an analysis defrag check to see how fragmented it is. If it is not more than 15% fragmented, leave it alone. You will always have some fragmentation, it is normal.
