The concept of "great graphics"?

Thread Starter
I wonder why so many people complain about graphics in games, ever since 2000, or even before, games will get down rated by reviews/etc just for having an outdated engine or not as sharp texture as the leading contemporary game.

Why is this so? Why can't fellow gamers be more focused on content/gameplay/storyline than flashy 1080p textures and CRISIS grade graphics?

Maybe I'm way different, but I would be happy when games get to a point where graphics get less important. Hell I would be happy if every game that came out now had Oblivion/Cod4 Graphics, as long as they had decent qualities beside visual appeal/bliss.

Anyone else share my opinion?

Reviews are exactly what they are: reviews. Most of them cover everything, I don't think you can generalize about articles written by multitudes of different people. And it certainly is important: people want to know how cool their game will look, how realistic it will be. I certainly wouldn't want to read a review about a game that omitted graphics, only to find it looked and performed like a heap of junk.

I do see your point, however; the plot, mechanics, and overall experience are what matter. Its unfortunate that for some games graphics are the only thing going for them.

It just like the journal review of Deus Ex HR that got leaked. That game looks dated as all hell, but I don't ever notice it when playing cause the gameplay and sounds are some awesomesawce

Well, because the graphics are possible now. The ideal combo would be those amazing graphics with amazing gameplay. They aren't mutually exclusive.

You have a standard - Oblivion/CoD4 - which means that graphics are also important to you. Otherwise you'd settle for all games looking like Galaga. Everybody has a graphical standard, some people's are just higher than others.

Because we'd all be playing Pong if nobody cared about graphics.

This.

It should also be noted that graphics are one of the few things people can universally agree on/measure. How good a plot or gameplay system is depends on who you ask.

If a game has 512x512 textures. It has 512x512 textures. If a game has low FPS readouts. It has low FPS readouts. These are things you can measure and/or come to a consensus to fairly quickly and easily.

Does the plotline of Mass Effect 2 suck and is it not engaging for repeat gameplay? Depends on who you ask.

Graphics are a pretty major part of any game, even if it has everything else...

This is an amazing point, graphics are still debateable from an artistic standpoint, but for the most part people can quickly glance at how a game looks and can come to an agreement.
Gameplay and story lines are very subjective and can come down to the end user, and is not going to be an easily shared opinion.
