The concept of "great graphics"? - Page 3

You made hear a lot whining about graphics but that's just from a very loud and vocal minority. In some cases people will whine about a game's graphics just because it's the most obvious flaw that sticks out so the game might also fall short on gameplay, controls, audio, story etc... but the whining gets focused on the graphics.

Graphics aren't the most important thing, but it's nice if a game looks good aswell as plays good.

I do think however that people blow a games graphical quality way out of proportion sometimes though, for and against. I think even I am guilty of this sometimes.

This is probably the more realistic answer.

Myself personally I'm just happy to be able to play a game. I don't expect a game to have specific settings, or to take advantage of a specific DirectX version. Maybe this is why PC gamers end up so dissapointed by alot of titles released to PC.

Because it's lazy, that's why. I don't really care about graphics, in fact, most of the games I play are pretty old (early 90s - early 00s), but when developers use same low res lousy textures, horrendous low-poly models, pathetic level geometry, tons of ridiculous blur, bloom, hdr, all that modern hideous looking crap, it's... well, it's annoying. Graphics don't make a game, but one simply cannot close one's eyes when a 2011 game looks like it was made in 2005.

Also, imagine if some of the absolutely best movies ever were shot with one of those "Flip" video camera things. They would have the same story, right?

Just as movies need to be visually appealing, games should look a certain way in order to attract consumers used to today's technology level.

It all depends on the game. For example games like SC2 graphics are like 10% importance. Games like GTA where the idea is to be close to city like looking graphics play a much bigger role. Also with hardware advancement people want to justify buying a better GPU,s or already bough GPU,s.

Pretty much. People who say gameplay is better then graphics is really just lying to themselves or has a bad graphics card.

If gameplay truly matters to you so much over graphics buy a xbox or ps3 and don't waste the money building a PC then.

If graphics didn't matter games like crysis, metro and others like them wouldn't sell as good as they do. Nor would graphic card manufacturers keep constantly releasing cards instead of just improving what they have with software.

See crysis 2. I am more of the opinion that consoles ruined that game though since instead of investing more money developing a proper game they did a multi platform without PC being the lead and it suffers because of it.

Crysis 1 still looks better with mods, sadly enough.

I much prefer good gameplay over good graphics, as long as the graphics aren't buggy or distracting. But I don't think game studios (or at least the marketing/management people there) agree. Seems too many games these days are focused on graphics but have very mediocre storylines or gameplay. They make it look good and spend millions on awesome graphics and trailers and marketing and then do a hack job on everything else.

Because people judge books by their cover, not by what's inside. This is the sad truth, the first thing people will comment on or judge in a game is the graphics. If the first impression with the graphics are not right, the person commenting will then have a different opinion of the gameplay even if it's above average.

We are now past the stage where people say "whoa, this is so great, we never had this when I was younger". Games are part of life now, just like movies and music. There is only so many different things you can do with gameplay, but you can always improve graphics. Simple.

FYI, I prefer gameplay over graphics too. There is a reason the only games I play besides MMO now are basically old skool RPGs on my PSP. Games in general are just boring now, lucky if we get a handful of amazing games per year. And by amazing, I mean something that does make you say "whoa, this is amazing, not played a game this good for ages".

We a spend a lot of money on our rigs - I think part of it is getting to see our hardware pushed to the max. What's that 1k rig worth if the most demanding game I can play is Tetris?
Well, not everyone is like that i hope, High-end graphics is just a bonus. I still play all the old RPG's i played when i was younger, on emulators ^^, Saga Saturn, PS1, GC etc.
