Why didn't the OP just buy a Wii and call it a day?

You could, you know, not spend 1k on a rig that's only going to play Tetris.

With regards to your rhetorical question which I'm going to answer anyway:

"Why else would someone be a PC gamer?",

I think there's more to it than just graphics, PC's have been around a long time before consoles, and I guess people just stick to what they're used to, mouse & keyboard. Also, PC gaming provides the user with the precision of a mouse, you can't get this on consoles, unless you're Mr Moddingtons, and whack a mouse & keyboard into your console.

If I could do that, I'd go and slaughter all those CoD:BO noobs.
I forgot to even finish what I was thinking LOZ.
The story line/multiplayer is just as important as the graphics IMO. But to say the graphics are fine at a low level to allow better game play (really only applys to the Xbox 360/ps3 games that will be ported to the PC) is just crazy when there are PC's that can run games at Crazily high details without even breaking a sweat.

If a game is exclusive to the PC only, I can see your point. I mean why make a PC only game and not take advantage of the PCs strengthes, right?

If a game is multi platform, with all platforms being released around the same time frame, it makes sense to create/use an engine/code that makes the development easy, and faster, over all platforms rather than just one.

Now you guys can sit here and whine about consoles dumbing down your graphical experience, but let's face it, there's more money to be made across all platforms rather than just catering to a niche crowd that are actually in the minority (ie: high end PC gamers).

The quicker you guys face that fact, and learn to accept it, the less dissapointed you will be in the future.

Now don't get me wrong, as a PC gamer I would love more focus on high end PC gaming from developers, but realistically I know that is not going to happen on a massive scale anytime soon.

I always expect every game to be a let down, I've stopped bigging up games, because I know for a fact they'll miss something I want in the game!

When I heard there were no Spears in Skyrim, I went on a big nerd rage in my head, I wanted to be a Argonian Spearman, my dreams of that happening in Skyrim are now dead, haha! Imagine, a small Lizard, vs a huge Dragon, it'd look really bad ass! Two creatures of similar elk battling to the death.

I have very low expectations for games now, so when they're released and I play them, if they've added lots of features that I haven't read about or seen before, I'll pick-up on them, and it'll be a new addition to features I'd like in the next game I purchase.

Just small things like, in an FPS being able to shoot out lights, or smash windows, cut through fruit with your knife, pick items up, throw them, make all furniture in the room, including pictures, wallpaper etc... be able to come off or get damaged, or when shot instead of showing the same bullet hole for every texture, actually break bits of the plasterwork off, and singe the affected wallpaper.

Or in an RPG, instead of invisibly having your weapons attached to your body, or pull your huge weapon out of no where. Actually have slots on your body where each weapon would go, have a sheath for each weapon, show every weapon you're carrying on your body... have a large container that you can see in the game world... So if you were travelling long distances, you'd need a way of getting all your gear from A to B, without an invisible bag. Stuff like that in a game, would have me enthralled!

Being able to go out into the wilderness, chop a tree down, make a bow, some arrows, a Spear, a little wooden house! Basically, Minecraft with Crysis graphics and physics, with Dark Messiah Might and Magic's swordplay! Perfect game.

Check out The Witcher 2
The main reason I bought The Witcher 2 was because I want to experience its luscious GRAPHICS on my rig...if it only had so so graphics I would have passed it by.

BTW, I'm primarily into flightsim so a good deal of my computer time is spent in IL-2 1946 and FSX, both of which are 4+ year old releases. But these two sims still ROCK, because of first rate GAME PLAY (plus their graphics are still relevant).

Face it... if a game looks like crap... you aren't going to pick it up.
unless you are a hardcore fan...

plain and simple.

Video games are made for visual and aural stimulation. In this day and age, if a game still looks like Pac Man, it isn't going to sell well. Just like everything else, people expect aspects of any product to improve. If the graphics of video games in general all just stayed the same, people would probably get bored of seeing the same crap, and companies wouldn't be able to sell products based on innovation and improvement.

This goes for sound as well. Dice has been doing an excellent job with their sound work, far surpassing any other video game company I know of. They realize that video games should be an all around experience, not one that just looks good, but one that sounds good, and is able to make the player feel like they're living in that environment at the moment.

Yes, content still certainly matters a lot, especially in RPG style games, but progress needs to be made with everything, not just a storyline and depth or dimension of gameplay in order for a game to keep up with competitors and continue selling.

You make a good point about the sound too. Ever since I got my astro mixamp for the 360 it has really opened my eyes to what a game like LA noire really sounds like. And when I first played BBC2 when it was in beta the sounds just amazed me to the point where I would literally jump when an explosion happend.

Oh yeah your wrong about people not buying a game with pacman graphics...
People flocked to minecraft in hordes and it has graphics Worse then pacman .

FYI if anyone wants crazy graphics, a game world on a fallout/TES scale, and amazing sound. Check out Just Cause 2 I must have missed the release of this game because I had never heard of it before last week lol.
