Europe is GSM because it is a collection of countries. Imagine if various countries used CDMA and UMTS/GSM, or if a country focuses mainly on CDMA...it would be a mess traveling everywhere, because CDMA phones do not have SIM card slots, so you'd need a new phone every time you visited a different country.

Basically, it's convenient.

So if it's on AT&T and is GSM with a sim card slot, is it safe to assume people are going to be jailbreaking these to use on other networks? Wonder if that will turn into anything like recent events with another one of their consoles. Although they did only say AT&T is the official carrier, maybe it wont be locked at all when it comes to wireless service?

I'm also wondering if a 3G connection will be all that useful. Is it just going to be for surfing the web, maybe streaming music? I can't imagine playing a game on a 3G connection being a very fun experience. I'll be picking up the WiFi version probably, unless there is a benefit to 3G that I'm missing.

Well, and playing games away from home online comes to mind.

Pigeon Holing the community with a provider = less sales. AT&T may have a streaming revenue of clients and do things for their older comrades, but seriously... should have gone with Verizon.

I'll admit they did select a better network than say T-Mobile.

Why do people care what wireless network will be carrying a freaking handheld gaming device? I've had ATT for years, they aren't that bad. They definitely have problems to fix, but in general they have provided decent service. If this handheld had the same games remade for 20+ years and sub-par technology, you'd all jump on it. I'm so sick of the whining here, it is seriously ridiculous.

As I stated in the post you quoted

I can't imagine playing a game on a 3G connection being a very fun experience.

That's the main thing that's bugging me. People complain about experiencing lag on their home internet that is most of the time faster than 3G. I can't imagine it working out very well for online gaming. So that leaves surfing the web and downloading games. It wouldn't work very well for downloading games either though because of small data caps. So surfing the web, and possibly streaming music is all that's left the way I'm looking at it.
