Intel Gaming/Multimedia Build - Page 2

I've installed heatsinks for CPUs but never GPUs, so I'll, most likely, either be buying the 6950s with after market coolers already installed or just the reference cards.

Each 6950 @ 2gb; 256-bit.

I'll be running the two with:

Mobo: ASRock P67 EXTREME4 (B3)
Case: HAF X 942

The reason I listed the motherboard is because it has 3x pci slots, of which, I assume I can choose any two for my Crossfired cards (the ones with the most distance, presumably)

The case is listed to have high air flow but I added two extra fans:
+1 200MM Top Fan
+1 VGA Fan Duct 120mm

Right now I've had different opinions on the cards:
A few people say that : Twin Frozr II MSI Heatsink will not exhaust hot air and instead blow hot air up into the case and thus the upper card and make both cards hot.
Others say that the reference cards MSI R6950-2PM2D2GD5 Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit are already hot and thus two would make it very hot.

Should I look at the Frozr III model? A different manufacturer?

I'd like to do the 6950s as they seem very future proof. Can someone give me some suggestions with support, thanks.

The full build here and here.

My reccomendations would be:
Get this ram instead, tighter timmings and also a bit cheaper (great ram).
This psu is a wiser choice if you ask me, cheaper but also better quality, efficiency and realiability. It's OEM though so you need to buy a power cord seperatly.
This motherboard is a better choice, better quality and more reliable (also better warranty, asrock's is only 1 year...).
Also, I would personally get an I7 2600k + Gtx580 instead. Not that what you chose isn't good but I7 + gtx580 is more viable since you have one very powerful card with a very powerful cpu, instead of 2 good cards (In CF they beat the 580, obviously) with a less powerful cpu. I suggest you watch this video (link at end), it shows the basics of bottlenecking and why you're better off getting I7+GTX580. The 2600k is 279.99$ at microcenter and the PNY Gtx580 is 479.99$ on newegg plus it has a 30$ MIR and Life-time warranty, which is a good addon...
For the case, it's a personnal choice but I really like working in my HAF 922, cable management is easy and it has good airflow. It's also very cheap.
I would try to squeese in 2 Samsung Spinpoint F3s in RAID0 if you don't want to be too slow on the HDD side...(it will make a difference, trust me, it's worth it)
TIM you chose is great, I love it!
Lastly, the Lite-On DVD burner 24x is 4$ cheaper, it's still 4$ ...

Hope this helps!
Good luck

How does the 2500k bottleneck the two cards?

I don't understand.
Have you watched the video? It briefly explains why a cpu bottleneck hinders the performance alot more than a gpu bottleneck, which is why getting a better cpu with a bit weaker gpu (gtx580 weak...haha!) will cause less bottlenecking and therefore you achieve better performance. So, the 2600k is more powerful than the 2500k and the 6950s are obviously better than a single GTX580 but the GTX580 is a single gpu card which is nice when it comes to upgrading...add a second card and voila. Also, there's no game you won't max out with a 2600k and a 580 right now (maybe metro 2033 at uber ultra sttings with AA and all that stuff...).

Hope this helps!

EDIT**: Might not be clear enough...What I mean is the bottleneck from the cpu if you get 2 cards (yes there will be one, small but still there) will be more important then the one from a gpu. Take me for example...I bought my gpu after the inital build (which was a 5770). If I had to do it again, I would get an I5 2500k with a GTX560Ti instead of a Phenom 955 and a 570, I really feel the cpu bottleneck sometimes...

So why do I need to change my graphics card then? Why not just buy the 2600k instead? (I plan on overclocking the 2500k, obviously) the twin cards can play anything, even metro on uber settings.

Lol I think I've mixed up 2 thread in my head Thought you had to keep the build cost as low as possible. If price is no factor then go for the 6950s with the 2600k, it will seriously rock, seriously But you really should get 2 HDDs for a RAID0 setup if you get a build this powerful. You could also get an SSD for boot and an HDD for storage instead if you like...

Hm, money is a bit of an issue, not enough for me to exclude certain items though.

Looking at the 2600k - Why is this so much better than the 2500k? Hyperthreading (explain please).

If that's the case - I'll stick with everything I have - but I like my current MOBO (3 pci slots) that allows me to have cards seated far away from each other and thus heat is dissipated into/out of the case instead of into the cards.

I was going to go with 2xF3 (500gb) for the lesser cost, I don't really need that much space - I have a lot of USB 3 1TB+ External Drives for media.
If you do a lot of rendering (you said it was also a multimedia build...) then you really should get the 2600k. But if you only game, then you won't see any difference... For the HDDs, I just didn't bother looking for the 500gbs on amazon...lolz
If you feel comfortable with having a mobo with a 1 year warranty then your ok with the Asrock but I've heard they're flimsy and break easily, the build quality is cheap... My asus board just died on me after 6 months and having a good warranty really is something you want, trust me... Asrock is a pain for RMA. (Asrock is from Asus but they seem to put a lot less effort in helping custommers lol).
