X-Fi Titanium HD - software volume not working

Thread Starter
I'm working through the kinks on a new build. For some reason my X-Fi Titanium HD will not respond to the Windows or Creative (software) volume controls. I can go from 0 to 100 and there is no change in volume. Physically changing the speaker volume on the console (Z-5500s) works fine. I could swear the software volume worked initially, but I've been focused on other issues and only just noticed this problem.

Any ideas what would cause this?

The only instance I can think of is that you are in Audio Creation Mode and you have Bit-matched playback enabled (check the Creative Control Panel).

Else- uninstall, use driver sweeper, reboot and reinstall.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, no dice. It's set to game mode, and I went through the uninstall/clean/reinstall process. I submitted a ticket to Creative Support. We'll see what they say...

So far, tech support has not been able to help. Anyone experience this problem before?

The Pax drivers may cause more problems than they fix.

The "creator" of those drivers makes changes to .ini and .inf files, guessing what each change may do.

When he states in his readme files that his drivers give "more better and crisper bass," I would run the other way.

With one set of drivers, the biggest change was that the installer had been changed to look more modern and up to date.

As for your problem, are you using digital or analog output?

Thanks guys. I'll probably hold off on the Pax drivers for the time being, but I appreciate the info. I'm running digital output (for 5.1 surround). Wish they hadn't removed the option for 5.1 analog on this card. Are there issues with optical and the software volume controls?

Ok, after half a dozen emails back and forth to Creative, this is the official answer:

"If you are using digital speaker connection, the volume control has to be adjusted on the speakers or receiver itself. The volume controls on the Creative software is only for analog speaker connection."

Can anyone confirm this? Seems bogus to me, but thought I'd see if anyone else has this issue.

It is 100% true. When using either the DDL or DTS connect packs, this behaviour is typical.

You must use the volume control on your speaker control pod, speaker, or receiver. The volume control in the Creative Console Launcher still turns. If you have both analog and digital outputs connected to the card at the same time and you turn off Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect, you will see that analog volume will be playing at the last position you rotated the knob to. You just could not hear it when digital encoding was enabled.
