Tired of multiple servers. HDDs bay limitation

Thread Starter
I have over 5 different servers, for my files. I am looking to get this case.

(Google image.)

I know it overkill. (for now, give me a year.) Going to use my SIG RIG as the base, I just need a 20+ Drive RAID card the Dell PERC6i I have has a 32 drive limit, BUT it needs a SAS expander.(not cheap, $300-800+)

So a New/Used RAID card would be best. I have two PCI-E x16 @ X8, so I could use two RAID cards.

I know my SIG RIG is overkill, but Case/5 2TB HDD's/RAID card(s)/new PSU is going to kill my wallet.

It has 3 physical x16 PCIe and a x1 slot.... you can use multiple controllers.
Once again...

Your only getting 5 2TB HDD's???

Why don't you get a 4 in 3 HDD cage (4 HDD's in 3 ODD bays) plus one 3.5" to 5.25" drive bay adaptor?

Sorted.

Dude, I've got 20 drives stuffed into a PC-V2000. How many drives do you need?

20 it will take a few checks to get them all, plus hot-swap is necessary. (Bad drives, new ones just makes it easier)

It's just the start-up costs force me to buy, only 5 or so. Every 3 check I going to get 5 or more. In till it's full.

GPU is in one, and my Hauppauge 1250 is in the x1 slot. It will still be used as a gaming RIG, in till the BD/Ivy replacement is here. So two x16 slots. (also, no on-board GPU.)

Thank you.

It's still not gonna be cheap.

You can try

1x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816116046

or

2x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816116044

I have a Norco RPC-4216 case with 3ware 9650SE-8LPML and 3ware 9690SA-8I raid controllers. Works like a champ.

See http://www.overclock.net/servers/731...er-24.html#235.

HP SAS Expander (get green pcb) has 9 SAS ports which can take 4 drives each. You can get them on ebay for around $200-300

It needs a main card however, I went with the IBM M1015 (rebranded LSI) got mine on ebay for $80 shipped.

Cheapest way to get the most drives in a system imo.

This. It'll run 32 drives no problem, so with an 8-port card and 6 onboard SATA ports you can build a massive 40-drive array (spanning 2 Norco cases) plus have a RAID1 for your OS, all for the price of a $50 HBA and a $250 expander. You don't get cheaper than that.

Thanks, Somenamehere. The cheapest HP SAS Expander on ebay is, $350-420 Shipped.

jibesh, That is what I am after. There is a 3ware 9650SE-24M8 for $550 and a BBU for $100. Cheap, I will see if I can get that.

There is (or used to be) an HP reseller on [Hard] that sold them for $250 shipped or so. Not been active in the thread over there for a while, but they might still be available.

Look here.
