CPU got wet... now what? - Page 5

Thread Starter
Question about the rice trick - does it have to be *in* the rice, or just have rice in the vicinity? The CPU was small enough to put in glass filled with rice, but a graphics card and a motherboard isn't going to fit so conveniently.

Geez man, your luck with water is just ridiculous.

Also, you could probably put it in a shallow box and cover it with rice. The rice is there to soak up the water that's in the parts.

Just because everyone has mentioned rice and alcohol and all such things to do with the water, I feel I should chip in and mention the fact that blasting your components with air from an indutrial compressor, while you're folding them, is more dangerous than letting your CPU have a swim

One issue is that the air could be forcing particles (dirt, metal etc) under your skin, which isn't good, as it sounds; the other is that using compressed air near broken skin (a cut for example), or an 'orifice' (hole ) which could result in air bubbles entering organs, your blood, etc, and making you quite ill, to the point of possibly being dead.

Not to scare you; just to warn you about high pressure compressed air before you try it again

Get a large tray or something. Rice is super-cheap thankfully.

When i do it with phones and ipods i always cover it. Obviously they aren't as sensitive as motherboards and GPUs though.

When I washed my board, I laid out some newspaper "what we used to read before the interwebs" and just poured rice all over the top of the board.
