The Witcher EAX on Asus Xonar DX

Thread Starter
Hi, guys! Just finished The Witcher 2 a few days ago and liked it so much that I thought I should play the first part now. It has also coincided with my purchase of Asus Xonar DX sound card and I am willing to try everything with it, including EAX.

So the question is, did someone try GX feature on this board, which emulates EAX? When I enable it in The Witcher, the sound becomes somewhat muddy and very different from when EAX is not enabled. So I was wondering if it should be like that or it means that Asus's emulation is not so good (for this game perhaps)?

I know EAX is getting old but since I missed all the hype time, I just wanna know what I was missing tongue.gif

I took this bit from Xonar DX manual just for some info. (Wouldn't let my copy-paste, had to screen)

attachment.php?attachmentid=214119&stc=1&d=1307440294

P.S. Is there any other game where I must try EAX? I heard of Bioshock.

EAX? Who even uses EAX anymore when we got these monstrous CPUs?

I do
I like it
games these days sound like *** without eax

I know with sound blaster cards you can override the sound setting and enable exa in any game (just an over layer)

No, I mean developers. EAX is just a fancy name for adding certain processing to sound, like reverb or echo via a soundcard, thus minimizing the cpu usage. But nowadays it's pretty damn pointless, because everything short of convolution reverb and some other real fancy stuff takes virtually no cpu resources at all. So... who even uses EAX anymore when we got these monstrous CPUs?

There are much better ways of doing 3D sound/postprocessing these days. We now have the OpenAL API (which, as its name implies, is open and free) and numerous commercial libraries built on top of OpenAL (e.g. Rapture3D) which can do pretty much everything EAX does while still being cross-platform and not just limited to Creative sound cards.

I wouldn't bother at all with GX as it is crap. Games I tried to use GX in sounded worse than they did with it off or with proper EAX on in-game.
