850W = GTX580 SLI + Ivy Bridge?

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
Got a SilverStone 850W ST85F-P. Fantastic PSU, very stable for my current build in sig. Under 200W idle.

Planning on upgrading the computer soon, the major upgrade being a high end Ivy-Bridge and dual GTX580's in SLI.

While *everybody* recommends going up to a 1000W or higher for GTX580 SLI, mathematically a 850W PSU *should* be fine, even with an overclock.

Efficiency of a power supply increases with loading, and I'd prefer a heavily loaded PSU than a minimally loaded one (it's the electrical engineer in me).

Is there any reason (other than "cause everyone else does") that I should buy a whole new PSU when this one is hardly a year old?

I'm wondering the same, will 850W be sufficient for a Bulldozer and eventual 580 SLI?
post #3 of 11
I don't know anyone that recommends a 1000 watt + PSU for a quad core and 580 SLI.

Yes, a quality 850 watt should be plenty.

Yea GTX580 SLI will run just fine on a decent 850w unit (which the Silverstone is)

You can even get away with GTX580 SLI on a 750w unit so 850w will do just fine (for both of you )

Totally fine, you could run the systems you describe on a quality 750W. A quality 850W is ample for SLI 580s and a high end CPU, all overclocked, along with plenty of peripherals etc. You will even have a little headroom. In my case I purchased my sig rig's AX850 entirely with the intention of going SLI 580s eventually... just need to find the funds

GTX580 is 245w GPU. That SilverStone 850W unit can do 67a/804w on 12v so it should be fine for sli rig.

Just won the two GTX580's on eBay, so looks like this'll be going ahead. Thanks all!

The HX850 is a good PSU, right?

And thanks for all the answers, a few watts more sure add to the price!
(I know, I know, don't skimp on the PSU... )
