Thats a nice rig...If it was me I just change the GPU for ATI 6970(Edit: Yea. I like ATI's), the cooler for a Noctua D-14 or one like mine and add a SSD for boot.

All very nice components. The DCUII Asus is very nice but bulky. As a single card it's pretty amazing. The hyper 212+ is a very safe bet if not also a bit big. What's your case going to be?

Thanks for all of your feedback so far, it's much appreciated
I was going to go with the: Cooler master HAF 912 Plus

Also, in terms of booting the system for the first time, will I need to boot without the GPU first?

Not really. You can boot it with all your components.

For the powersupply, go with corsair. They are the best IMO.
You shouldn't cheap out on the PSU, because if that goes then so can the rest of your system.

As in it could damage the whole system, or just stop providing it power?
Both, in that order.

I like some of cooler master's stuff, but a lot of the time they cheap out.

Corsair TX-650w

Or maybe even the 600W will be fine.
