1055T + MSi 870ag54 "am i boned?"

hey im new to the forums, i caught an interesting sticky on the forum concerning mosfets on MSI boards blowing up and all manner of horror stories.
i built my current rig back in december 2010 and i have an MSI 870a-g54 and a 1055T which i have had overclocked to 3.0Ghz (NB=200->215mhz) from the word go. i am intregued as im sure there are many msi products which havn't blown up (lest it have become a wider known issue), and not sure whether this is just another one of those horror stories that gets blown out of proportion and branded as the "worst thing ever1!!!1!!!" because a few idiots tried to push 4Ghz with some crazy voltages and blew their boards up

(also i'd like some feedback on my rig if at all possible ;p [my first build-ever])

I wouldn't worry as long as you plan on staying at 3Ghz. But, yes, this board's VRMs can fail at 4Ghz+ with 125W CPUs as documented here.

how far do you think i could push the 1055T on stock voltage and be "safe"?

Stay under 1.3v, try to undervolt as much as you can. My 1055T can do 3.3ghz at 1.15v.

And this is not something blown out of proportions, the MSI VRMs can easily catch fire even at stock if you stress them too much(like any program that uses all 6 cores).

I also recommend you do not stress test your CPU, because in multiple cases some of the VRMs blew when running Prime95, even at stock.

They're already heatsinked, and the heatsinks are useless. Despite that, this board is known for failures on all sorts of different 125W/other high TDP processors, whether overclocked or at stock. I recommend you remain at stock speed with the stock cooler, and NO FURTHER, if you want to continue to keep running this i.e. don't have money to upgrade. I'm sure you'd prefer saving your money for a new motherboard, instead of blowing that money on the shipping costs to RMA to MSI.

If you saw the list of horror stories in my thread (assuming that is the one you saw), there were actually many many failures on this particular board - some on OCs that weren't particularly intensive. This is I find one of the most common of the failure-prone boards. The reason for this seems to stem down to the overall design, with the use of NIKOS MOSFETs with improper temperature rating, lack of OCP protection against VRM catastrophe, and the possibility that the motherboard you are using is actually a 2+1 split phase (far short of the MINIMUM 4+1 spec for 125W that AMD themselves recommends), referencing the similarly designed [VRM-wise] 890GXM MSI board.

Don t worry!
MSI will RMA the mobo and send you a new one if something bad happens.Just make sure the PSU is quality so it will shut down if something wrong happens.
Change that power supply!
Don t go higher with the voltage and make sure you have good airflow in the case.

Not if the mosfets are Nikos. They go boom under the heatsinks as well.If it is that they blow up they will ,with or without the heatsink.
1055 at stock should work.Don t overclock!

Id rather not take the risk to be honest as my partner uses my pc regular and if anything did go pop she wouldn't have a clue.

I was planing on buying a 2nd SSD for raid 0 .

Instead im going to pick up an ASUS iv formula as they look the nuts.

I will be getting the Phenom X6 for my birthday and im not even thinking of putting in my 870a-g54 bored now really happy someone has pointed this out to me

thanks for the help

If its Nikos "free" you should not have problems.
Take a look and see if the mosfets are Nikos.
At stock clocks that CPU should work.
If you want overclocking go for better stuff.
