[ZDNet] ARM betting on Windows 8 to get big share of notebook market

No, ARM uses less power than x86 processors which means better battery life and honestly similar performance since most compilers don't optimize that well anyway.

similar performance?
HOW?

webbrowsing performance might be similar, so will word and movies.
most things requiring any bit of power will be noticeably slower though

ARM performance still is not close to even an Atom yet.


Compilers optimize where they can but it is the developer that really needs to do the work.

It is good enough.... well, almost.

ARM SoC have a specialized hardware to handle video and audio. While they lack processing power, they are well-suited for media consumption. This is good enough for most people daily tasks.... web surfing, media, and basic content creation.

If you don't play games, encode video, edit high resolution photos, develop, etc, why do you need a 4GHz quad-core?

It turns out that everyone really just wants the cheapest, neatest way to browse facebook and watch the occasional youtube video. Whoever can do that the best is going to make tons of money.

ARM gains efficiency and power by offloading as many things as possible to dedicated processors, for encoding, decoding, etc. This means that those operations are far faster and far more efficient. There is no need for raw CPU power, if all of the CPU intensive operations are offloaded to dedicated hardware!
Day of the greek, I think you are very wrong. The iPad is a great device, but it is a companion device-- you cannot solely use it. It browses Facebook and Youtube quite admirably, but it is not a productivity device.
The piece that is going to make 'tons of money' is the group that produces a product that appeals well to the multitude of use cases that consumers wish to subject it to-- as a tablet, as a laptop, docked to their screen/ TV at home-- anything they want, and seamlessly.
