Ubuntu on an old laptop - need suggestions - Page 3

You might try out mint linux 10... I love it, it's based off of ubuntu (10.04 actually), with a bit more polish. I doubt it'll fix your problem, but I do like it better than ubuntu now (probably 4 year user of ubuntu, it's very similar, but I feel better with the polish)

Sleep mode has always been a little flaky for me on Linux, I tend not to use it. Wireless is a tricky one, it suffers like the video drivers do - lack of open-source commitment.

None the less, you could try madwifi drivers, or try compiling your own kernel (I'd recommend this, there's a recent thread on it for your CPU). If you go for the compiliation, you can specify your wireless driver in it, and compile it in (not sure if it's best to do that, or to compile it as a module, as it varies with each chipset - Google is your friend)

I thought about that but it does it regardless of position in the house, even a meter away from the router it has issues.

This sounds like fun, specially since I should be studying for my physics test tomorrow XD I'll google around quick. Thanks for all the help guys!

EDIT: I'm chickening out on compiling the kernel, I have no idea what I'm doing so rather not but I've found something: wicd is telling me that the router is not accepting the password I give it. I am 100% certain I am giving it the correct pass. The wireless is running on WPA-AES using a pre shared key. I changed it to this from WPA-TKIP when the Wii had issues connecting to the router. Does that have anything to do with it?

I got it working with the madwifi drivers

I also decided to just go with compiling the kernel - It's running right now. I set the CPU govenor to on demand and removed a whole bunch of stuff this lappy doesn't need. I wonder how long it'll take XD

EDIT: The recompile worked! woot! I'm just recompiling madwifi-ng now then all will be set !

Okay, one last thing that's annoying me. It seems whenever I boot the box up it sits with a black screen and only a flashing _ in the top left corner of the screen, and then after a few seconds it comes up with 2 ioctl cdrom errors. Okay that seems to be gone, I just rebooted the machine as I was typing this and it's giving me the ioctl errors anymore. Though it does sit with the flashing _ for about 15 seconds, is there any way I can stop that or shorten it? Right after that the ubuntu loading screen comes up and then very shortly after that the login screen appears.

Good news!

About the flashing cursor - it'll be running some kind of daemon, or trying the mount some drives that aren't connected. What does it show in /var/log/boot.log ? How about in /var/log/message (although this might be way too full to get anything useful)

I didn't see anything weird. But then again I'm a noob so my observation doesn't mean much

EDIT: Another question, can anyone suggest ways of saving power? Right now the main battery of the lappy doesn't work and the travel battery only lasts 2 hours. I used powertop to see what was eating power and that gave me a few things to do. I've also disabled bluetooth on startup, but I don't know what else I can do.
