OC ing my 2500k on stock air.

Thread Starter
Just a quick heads up to anyone trying to OC on the stock heat sink DONT, ive only tried 4 ghz and when running Prime 95 the temps were up at 90 ffs. Keeping it at stock for this now and just ordered a Cooler Master Hyper 212 so I begin proper safe overclocking.

On a side note is there an i5 2500k club on the forums I couldn't find one and the 2500k is a beast even without an OCing!?

I don't know why people pay so much $$ for an unlocked processor, a nice board and want to use the stock heatsink for overclocking? Just doesn't make sense to me when a decent cooler is $30 There are a few Sandy Bridge clubs - and yes a 2500K at stock is still a beastly processor

If you really want to overclock get at least 30+$ heatsink. Otherwise you won't take out as much potential and will want more.

or pay like $20 more and get the best air cooling heat sink there is for yours. You paid for a 2500K and want to OC, why not get what you paid for?

$25 for a hyper 212+, I'm at 4.6ghz 24/7 and it never goes above 63C. I have pretty good cooling in my case that helps.

What was your voltage for 4GHz?
And your ambient?

I found the stock cooler could handle 4GHz/1.26v.

I was able to get up to 4.1GHz on the stock cooler. My Core volt was at 1.28 (I don't remember my other settings, I know I had to disable the Intel turbo boost), but you can see the link in my sig. I know I didn't have to change much and my temps were at 70C under full load, but it folded for two weeks w/ no instability.

However...I just installed a Hyper 212+ and now I'm at 4.6GHz and my temps under load are at 58C. I wanted to push the stock cooler to see how far it could go and I was happy to get stable at 4.1, but seriously, the 212 was like $30 and is an amazing cooler for the money. I'm trying to hit 5.0GHz with it, but I'm upgrading the fans. we'll see if that works.

Anyway, have fun with the 2500K, its an awesome chip!

Edit: Also, my ambient temps are around 20C, my system is in my basement office, so it stays nice and cool, which probably helped me push the stock cooler. My case sucks for air flow, that will be my next upgrade (might have to do that to get to 5Ghz).
