Adding new hard drive

Thread Starter
Hey guys, just wanted to make sure I had this right before I tried to do it. I just bought a new hard drive because my current one is running out of space and slowly dying as well. Now, I have a lot of games on here and would rather not re download them from Steam if I can avoid it.

Could I transfer them to an external then load them onto the new one after it formats and I get my OS installed on it? Or would it be better if I format and put the OS on the new one and then try and find a spare SATA cable and hook them both up afterwards and transfer then?

I would use the external if you already have it set up.

The way I do it is just to copy your steamapps folder to your external. When you install your new OS, download and run steam. Then copy the steamapps folder to the new steam directory and overwrite. You'll need to right click and update the games in your library, but they will instantly show available.

I believe the sanctioned method from Valve includes moving the steam.exe and steamapps folder to the new location, then running steam.exe. However, I've done the first method no less than a dozen times without a hitch.

Either method should work fine. You'd just be removing a step by directly transferring your games.

Thanks guys.

Another question. I actually wanted to put Windows 7 on the new hard drive. All of my XP stuff should just transfer over right? Im fairly certain if I do an upgrade from XP to 7 that I lose all of my data in the process. Just wanted to make sure

You'll need to perform a fresh install and none of your applications will follow.

Back up that data!

Data, yes, programs, no.

Anything that relies on the registry or files installed to the XP OS (probably everything you installed to XP) will not work on the new drive. The only programs that will still launch from that drive would be programs that install all their contents to the install folder on your external, and don't put files into other locations in the OS (or write registry entries that won't exist in your 7 install).

I can only think of a few programs I use that dump all their contents to the install directory and don't depend on the registry.
