Greatest Games? Need an explanation.

I love games. Play every genre -insert hardcore gamer explanation here-

However...there are certain games, that have me completely baffled as to why they're great. Some I probably won't understand, because I was too young back then. But others...-shrugs-

So I'd like an objective view on why these are considered classics:
  • Half-Life series
  • Halo series
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Bioshock series
  • Dragon Age Origins
  • BONUS: MMOs in general

I wouldn't put any of those games in my own personal greatest. They're certainly not bad games, not by a long shot, but not my personal greatest.

However some of them clearly did something right to gather such huge fanbases behind them. Especially the three I left.

I certainly wouldn't have put Dragon Age, Bioshock, or any MMOs in there though. Not by a long shot. They're far from classic in my opinion.

I've never understood why the HalfLife games got so popular. The story is OK, but not great. i think it really took off becasue the hero was a geek and not some mussle bound Rambo like character. It might also be because of HL2 was the first game to really incorporate a lot of physics into the game well (read gravity gun). Though the other weapons were rather boring/annoying. I had a lot of fun with the crossbow though.

I think Halo became a "classic" because it was the first game that did a good job at multiplayer on a console. Though from what I've heard halo 2 was not good at all. I've never played Halo and I ever will. It is just another FPS to a PC gamer like me.

Final Fantasy 7 was just a really good story. If it had been book it would have gone best seller easily for sci-fi/fantasy lists. Plus it really had good graphics for the time. It was easy to play, but yet mildly challenging. The mini-games were incorporated perfectly. It was just a really good game that made you care about the characters. Though I am biased as it was the first video game of any kind that I ever played. I haven't played it in a couple years now, but I bet I could write a walk through covering every last detail from memory. Easy for me to call it a classic, and seeing as how copies of the game are selling for $50+ on ebay yet I would say a lot of collectors agree with me.

Bioshock was another case of a decent story line...though I'd hardly call it a classic. The story was rather predictable. The plasmids were what made it different, but they ended up not being all that useful. Bioshock 2 was $10 game realatively soon after release and was pretty big flop actually.

Dragon age has a lot in common with FF7 though I personally really don't care for it all that much. That is mainly because to have the more interesting characters in your party(and have them be happy) you have to do stuff that no hero would do. A character like that would have said to hell with Ferelden and just left the mess to some one else. Though if you are a hero you have to have the whiney virgin fighter, the high school glee club leader(but used to be an assasin), and an old lady mage in your group. Boring...However, I can see how some one could really like the game. A classic...i wouldn't call it that. I don't see many people installing it ten years from now, but I guaranty there will be a lot of people still playing Baldur's Gate in ten years and that game is already over ten years old. There are even still a few new mods that come along every now and then.

The only MMO I think you could call a classic is Everquest. Everquest created the mold for nearly every other MMO since its release. There has been very few that have deviated from the Everquest model (and been even semi-successful anyway). Eve Online is the only one that really comes to mind.

Campaign wise Halo 2 was weaker than Halo CE. Multiplayer wise Halo 2 was stronger.

Half life is the only one on there I liked. It has good level design, but I too wouldn't say it's one of the greats..

I'd add the Battlefied series to the list. I just can't understand why they are so popular.

Bioshock is great, awesome story, even more awesome setting, with fresh gameplay. I don't know how you can't see that. FF7 is overrated imo, and people just think it's cool because of Sephiroth. The first Halo was cool, the rest did nothing for gaming and was Bungie milking the franchise. The rest of the titles I'm on the fence about them being considered 'classics'.

HL and HL2 where somewhat revolutionary games in their times. Each brought about changes to the FPS formula that stick today. They also had a good story, and were well done games. Not much to say with this one.

The Halo series has a great story, and had very refreshing gameplay. Halo 2 had the best FPS multiplayer experience to be had on a console to date.

One of the best video game stories ever told. Certainly one of the best, if not the best story for the time. It was the first game that actually made you care about the characters, and could illicit such an emotional response from gamers. The graphics and gameplay were really great for the time too.

Not exactly a classic, but definitely a solid series. The atmosphere and setting of first was very good as well.

Not a classic. A good example of a genre of RPG that had all but died in the recent years until its release.
